Report: How many homes are sitting empty in Florida
mypanhandle ^ | 03/29/2022

More than 16 million homes are sitting vacant across the U.S., according to a report using census data.

The study by LendingTree ranked the nation’s 50 states by their shares of unoccupied homes. The highest vacancy rates were found in Vermont, Maine and Alaska. Each state has between 20% and 22% of its housing stock vacant.

The three states combined are home to more than 315,000 unoccupied units.

Other states rank lower on the list but have many more vacant units because they are larger. Florida, for example, is No. 6 on the list. About 17% of states in Florida are vacant, according to the report. That’s nearly 1.7 million housing units.

Just because a home is vacant doesn’t mean it’s rotting away. The report points out there are several reasons a home could be vacant; it may be on the market or it could be a vacation home. There’s also the chance it’s uninhabitable.

To: The people have spoken

“How exactly do they know if a home is vacant?”

Because the squatters file a complaint with the police department that the house is not properly stocked with food, booze and porn.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has (at least) 3 homes and he can't possibly be living in all 3 at the same time.

OF COURSE there are a lot of vacation homes in states like Vermont and Florida. And in cities like New York, there are a lot of apartments owned by foreign residents who want a place to escape to, if needed.

(It must suck to be a loony left reporter pounding out articles in mom's basement and have big college loans. Shoulda majored in something useful in college.)

Same out here where I am-rural area-lots of houses and cabins on/near the river and lake are owned/leased by Summer people on weekends or by snowbirds from as far North as Canada who live in them from Nov to April-and pretty much support the nicest resort golf course in the county with greens fees, as well as meal purchases at the tourist trap shops, restaurants and bars, regular grocery shopping, liquor stores, etc-those are not “empty homes”-their part-time residents are a good seasonal source of income to our local businesses...

The author of the article apparently does not understand how Winter tourism works in the warmer states...

“Just show the damn chart!”

But then the legions of graduates with journalism degrees won’t be able to justify their existence by churning out the blocks of text everyone skips past in clickbait articles. Think of it as a charity program for people who made bad life choices.

Born in FLA, lived all over the state but grew up in Indiana.
Been in Virginia since ‘73 but as family is in SW Fla, I go back frequently. Dad UofF, I did grad work at UofMiami.

I’ve watched the whole state become an insane overcrowded zoo. It was so nice there in the ‘70’s. Yeah, I’m 76, but I don’t drive oblivious to all the vehicles around me and my turn left turn signal on for miles when I’m going to turn right.

Getting from point A to B anywhere in the state in cities from Tallahassee east is non-stop rush hour. Interstate traffic is insane.

Who wants to live like that? Not me. I’d love to leave winters the older I get, but Fla is too crowded, especially with half-brain-dead elderly (I’m not one - I still ride motorcycles and drive Porsche’s - and don’t get tickets. I heat with firewood I cut myself with my son’s help).

What’s going to happen to mid to south Fla when a crisis hits, and supplies can’t get down I-75 or 95? I don’t want to live there then.

I say all this with 4 friends moving there to Lakewood Ranch.

Give me the wide open spaces of Virginia west of Richmond - at least I’ll die here free from the insanity of congested humanity....colder than I like.....but able to enjoy a rural life.........

So a vacation home is considered "vacant"?

That is odd.

Because they aren't vacant anymore then your house is "vacant" because you are at work.

I see people are playing with words again.

“t’s hard to find very many vacant homes in the panhandle—homes under $1M sale (often site unseen) within days and available rental property is scarce—especially homes for rent. “

We have people stoping by homes when someone is outside asking if they are interested in selling. Not sure how much longer I can sit on this house with all the money flying around...

Exactly. Snowbirds’ second homes.

It would be like them doing their study and only observing Christians’ homes on Sunday mornings. The resulting data would say a huge percentage of homes are vacant.
