Taiwan Looks to Ukraine War for Ideas to Defend Against China

A spokesman for President Tsai Ing-wen said last week that the Defense Ministry is weighing whether to extend the requirement, with new polls showing support for the idea among 70% or more of Taiwanese adults. Taiwan’s defense minister told lawmakers last week that a task force is studying the possibility of conscription as long as 12 months, with a decision to be made this year. “If a war broke out in Taiwan, the four-month military training we currently have is not enough,” said the defense minister, Chiu Kuo-cheng.

One idea under consideration by lawmakers and defense experts is to stockpile attack drones, after their deployment in Ukraine helped Kyiv slow Russia’s advances.

The legislature’s defense committee approved this month a motion to propose more training on anti-aircraft warfare, possibly involving portable weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, which were used by Ukrainian soldiers.

“When we look inside the urban warfare in Ukraine, the antitank and anti-aircraft equipment possessed by individual soldiers is actually playing a big role in deterrence,” said Wang Ting-yu, a lawmaker with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, who proposed the motion. He has also pushed for speedy delivery of four MQ-9 Reaper drones that the U.S. agreed to sell Taiwan in 2020 but that Taipei has yet to order.

A Taiwanese military official said he expected the drones to enter service by 2025.

Some security experts say Ukraine’s experience shows the importance of stockpiled weapons because the country quickly burned through its inventory of mobile weapons and had to rely on further supplies from the U.S. and other countries brought in over its land border. Providing Taiwan with additional weapons in a conflict would be more challenging, mainly because it is an island.

“Resupplying Taiwan is a significantly harder task

Drones of all sizes, types and capabilities. Mines that can be remotely activated and can be temporarily shut down to allow your ships and drones to pass. Of course, shoulder launched anti tank and aircraft missiles. Oh, and lots and lots of stored food, water and medicine in lots of different places.

Compared to Russia, the ChiComs would likely have no issue with reducing it all to rubble.

Taiwan already has so many anti ship and anti air missiles that the remains of China’s armies will be able to walk to Taiwan over all the sunken ships and aircraft.

But if China wants to fight, they will still win. AT a horrendous cost.

But they won’t do that. China will eventually make an offer the Taiwanese cannot refuse, and they will surrender without a war. Maybe China blockades Taiwan and starves them out, with no one willing to help. Who knows, only God knows.

Diesel-electric subs. Fighters. Semi-trailers full of sand that can be driven onto runways to make landing an aircraft a suicide mission. Chinese can’t invade if they can’t land the invaders and resupply them.

Blow up the landing craft. Hsiung Feng III is Taiwan’s supersonic surface to ship missile.

I bet the Ukraine wishes it had a wide body of water between it and Russia.

My friend’s son just went through his mandatory military service after university.

4 months of “training” - and he didn’t fire a gun one time

Taiwan is not serious about their defense.

If they do so, it would be largely at teh expense of their own economy. Taiwan produces a LOT of the chips the rest of the world uses in finished product. Maybe they are willing to take the hit, but it won't be small.

Taiwan needs their own general Yi.

I say sell them whatever they ask for at this point. If China conquers them anyway, then we can make a quick buck at least.

They might want to start recruiting a foreign militia now. Just a thought. Contracts in place.

The Taiwanese should be building and stashing 10’s of 1000’s of IEDs , right now . There should be buried caches of them all over the place .

Buy lots of missiles. Lots and lots of missiles. And drones.

An ATGM is a pretty good weapon for taking out a landing craft.

That’s insanity.

Heck, I wasn’t in it, but in the mid-70s, high school Junior ROTC kids shot .22s at the range in the basement.
