New Zealand’s leader voiced concern Monday over a draft security agreement between China and the Solomon Islands that, if approved, could see Beijing establish a military base in the South Pacific.
In addition, Australia’s prime minister reiterated his nation’s concern about the planned agreement that was leaked online last week.
The security pact would allow Beijing to set up military bases and deploy troops in the Pacific island nation, “marking the start of a much sharper military competition than anything we’ve seen in the region for decades,” said David Capie, director of the Centre for Strategic Studies at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday said her country sees the pact as “gravely concerning.”
“We see such acts as a potential militarization of the region and also see very little reason in terms of the Pacific security for such a need and such a presence,” Ardern told Radio NZ when asked about a possible stationing of Chinese military ships in the Solomon Islands.
Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison was quoted by the Australian Broadcasting Corp. as saying that the agreement was a “reminder of constant pressures and threats that present in our region to our own national security.”

On 30 January 2008, at 27, Ardern was elected president of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) at their world congress in the Dominican Republic for a two-year term until 2010.
Upset she was left out ? LOL
Our boys poured their blood on that soil at Guadalcanal and other areas. We deserve better treatment than letting the Chinese build bases over there.
Why would that deal matter to New Zealand? I thought it didn’t matter what alliances a neighboring nation makes.
And New Zealand is 2300 miles away.
Right...
But... doesn’t a sovereign nation have a right to make whatever deals it wants? That’s what I keep hearing lately... even if you share a border.
“ Our boys poured their blood on that soil at Guadalcanal and other areas. We deserve better treatment than letting the Chinese build bases over there.”
But wait a minute. The Solomon’s are a sovereign country that has the right to Make their on decisions. Right? Isn’t that what Russia was told about Ukraine?
I don’t get why everyone is so upset if that statement is true?
Like China is going to worry about a country with a leader with a name of “Jacinda”.
Has New Zealand banned chinese nuke vessels from their territory yet?
Did our boys spill blood in Ukraine? No.
Jacinda doesn’t have a single fighter plane or a single tank.
Not one. But they do cool Hakas and dance routines.
They do have that right. It doesn’t make it right.
It all goes back to my emBASEee strategee

Ok, so if a nation spills a lot of their blood in a world war in a nation, you are saying they retain an interest in that nation?
They do if they build an emBASEee there.

Ok, explain how Solomons making a deal with China is different than Ukraine making deals with NATO.
Weak.
“Ok, explain how Solomons making a deal with China is different than Ukraine making deals with NATO.”
Who said it is?
Would NZ object to a U.S. presence? Or a NATO presence?
Doubtful.
It’s because they are fascist dictator murderers and untrustworthy. They pose a threat inherently.
NATO only posed a threat to USSR. That was NATO’s reason for being.
Never posed a threat to post Soviet Russia.
That's an example of severe "understatement"...
At least for me, who can remember FDR saying the same kind of thing about the jap expansionism before Dec 7, 1941...
“ Did our boys spill blood in Ukraine? No”
What in the heck has that got to do with anything? There was plenty of our boys blood spilled in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq. Exactly for what? To see us pull the plug and walk away. The war mongers in DC are always ready to send somebody else’s kid off to be killed. Our leaders could care less about that blood.
In the meantime they are making every excuse in the world to let NATO (our boys) land in Ukraine. In other words a sovereign country having the right to call their own shot. That’s exactly what the Solomons want to do.
Nothing but more hypocrisy
