Search teams have recovered the second black box from the wreckage of the China Eastern 737-800 as authorities have now confirmed all passengers and crew were killed in the crash.
The recovery of the second black box should allow experts to begin piecing together what caused the plane to nosedive into the mountainous terrain in rural China last Monday.
Investigators have identified 120 of the plane's 132 victims...
The flight from the city of Kunming in southwestern China was flying at 29,000 feet last Monday when it suddenly nosedived into a mountainous area.
The plane crashed shortly before it would have started its descent to the airport in Guangzhou, a provincial capital and export manufacturing hub near Hong Kong on China's south-eastern coast.

Firefighters taking part in the search found the recorder, an orange cylinder, on a mountain slope about 1.5 meters (5 feet) underground, state broadcaster CCTV said, and experts have since confirmed it is the flight data recorder.
The two recorders should help investigators determine what caused the plane to plummet from 29,000 feet (8,800 meters) and into a forested mountainside in southern China.
Video posted by CGTN, the international arm of CCTV, showed an official holding the orange can-like object on site with the words 'RECORDER' and 'DO NOT OPEN' written on it. It appeared slightly dented but intact.
Crash investigators and safety experts have pointed out the mystery of the crash, as aircraft such as the 737-800 are designed so they don't dive so aggressively.
This means that the nose being pointed down for so long could only be explained by aircraft failure or pilot action.
A review of Flightradar24 data from Bloomberg News revealed that the jet was flying 'well above' normal speeds when it took the dive, 'possibly nearing the speed of sound'.

This speed helps explain the part found six miles from the crash site, as jetliners like the Boeing 737 could cause light-weight components to the wings and tail sections to break off, according to investigations on the 1997 crash of SilkAir 737-300 in Indonesia.
The fatal SilkAir flight was also travelling close to the speed of sound before it crashed into a river - and the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee concluded that the captain most likely did it as a murder-suicide.
The data also showed that the aircraft remained intact for the most part, as it continued to transmit its position up until 3,225 feet.
Poor Fang Fang
Uh, was there some doubt? When they try to ID the remains, guessing they’ll only find “XX” and “XY” components. No (*) to ID x-genders or glbtqrpxyz types?
So do the bucket operators (orange and teal) get any kind of hazardous pay from the generous Peoples Republic of China?
That’s only cause they are using country bumpkins, not Harvard graduates, in this sad game.
Thank you, Captain Obvious.
Too much like Flight 93 of 9-11-01.
According to the flight radar; The plane was flying stable at 29,100 ft @ 457 mph then dropped 20,000 ft in only a minute or so. The over speed 590 mph, didn’t occur until it had dropped nearly two miles straight down. I believe max speed is around 550
” and the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee concluded that the captain most likely did it as a murder-suicide”.
Wow.
Gotta wonder who on that flight needed to disappear.
“Search teams recover second black box from wreckage of crashed China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737 as officials confirm all 132 passengers and crew are dead”
After watching the video of the plane crashing nose down, straight into the ground and the yuge crater it left, I was still hoping for survivors. /s
Also, “what caused the plane to plummet from 29,000 feet (8,800 meters) and into a forested mountainside”. Implying level flight into the side of a mountain, which it definitely was NOT!
An aside: They can make flight recorders to withstand enormous impact, (”...showed an official holding the orange can-like object on site with the words ‘RECORDER’ and ‘DO NOT OPEN’ written on it. It appeared slightly dented but intact.”), but they can’t make a football helmet that prevents concussions.
“Firefighters taking part in the search”
Because of recent headlines, my mind read Foofighters taking part in the search
Speed in a plane is based on a lot more than I know, but any FReeper pilot could help us.
The fastest recorded speed seems to be about 825 mph ground speed, boosted by a 200+ mph tailwind.
My last flight to Europe took advantage of the jet stream and made it to London almost an hour early. On the way back, the crew chose to fly over Greenland and Hudson Bay to avoid the jet stream, the flew straight south from way northern Canada, at about the Minnesota/North Dakota border down to DFW Airport. A buddy was in a plane that took the direct route and had to stop in Newfoundland for fuel.
0.79 Mach is normal cruising speed for the 737 series.
Jeepers!!! A 200+mph tailwind sounds like a trailing tornado. I’d throttle max to get out of the way if it was an option.
Sort of hair on fire.
I smell Muslims
