It’s a good argument, as far as it goes. But it is also possible the islamists would have come up with some other excuse. They declared war on us back in the 1970s.
The issuance of the jihad was followed shortly thereafter by the embassy bombings in Africa, then by 9/11 a few years later. Prior to that, AQ hadn't targeted Americans.
