Beshear accuses lawmakers of ‘cruel’ votes on veto overrides

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Republican lawmakers cast votes that will “kick struggling Kentuckians while they are down” when they passed bills impacting jobless benefits and food assistance, Gov. Andy Beshear said Tuesday.

The Democratic governor responded on social media a day after the GOP-led legislature voted to override his vetoes of the two measures. Both proposals now become state law.

It reflects the bitter policy disputes likely to continue between Beshear and Republican lawmakers. And some of the issues could spill over into next year’s campaign when the governor seeks a second term in the GOP-trending Bluegrass State.

One bill passed despite Beshear’s opposition revamps rules for Kentucky’s laid-off workers to receive unemployment benefits. It will increase work-search requirements for people receiving jobless benefits and tie the length of time recipients get benefits to the unemployment rate. That could cut the number of benefit weeks by more than half in times of low jobless rates.

The other disputed measure ends Kentucky’s long-running COVID-19 state of emergency a few weeks earlier than planned.

Aren’t sales taxes “cruel” ? What about cigarette taxes? Everyone knows the main consumers of cigarettes are poor people.

What about gas taxes? Kentucky’s gas tax is $0.26/gallon. That’s almost three dollars to fill up the tank on a subcompact car, many of which are driven by low-income people. Isn’t that cruel? Why not show some compassion, Governor Beshear, and declare a moratorium on Kentucky’s gas tax? Every little bit helps when you’re down and out.

And what about the tax paying citizens who have to fund this fell-good, vote buying process?

I despise that man.

His dad was corrupt scum and he is just as bad. Baby faced Beshear.

It is thought that Americans want self rule and democracy. Yet they continue to vote for family dynasties.

Every time I log on to WDRB to check the weather the news has a picture of that weasel spouting crap. I truly cannot stand to see his face.

Mr. Beshear is only Governor because his predecessor Mr. Bevin, stated he wanted to put tolls on the Ohio River bridges. An act of political stupidity unparalleled in Kentucky political history. Commuters to Cincinnati would have no practical options around the tolls, this effectively handed Mr. Bashear his margin of victory.

This year beat Bevan the same way Biden beat trump. In fact, that Kentucky gubernatorial race was almost certainly a test drive of the election stealing process used to be trump.

The problem with Democrats here in Kentucky is it’s a highly Republican state now and he’s the only Democrat that won any surrounded by Republicans at all corners. So they have the votes to override any veto. The guy is a paper tiger.

I moved to Kentucky from Seattle 11 years ago because the state is so conservative. I am currently sitting in a Walgreens parking lot in Albuquerque New Mexico waiting for my wife to come out with some stuff she needed before we go back to our motel. I look around here at everything I see and say to myself, this is obviously a Democrat state. Homeless people running across the street, when I stop for gas at a service station three separate people come up to me asking for money, and the worst part, at Walmart I asked where the plastic bags were and they don’t have plastic bags only paper bags but you got to pay a dime for those.

I can’t wait to get out of this hellhole state and back to the freedom of Kentucky

I don’t think so - Bevin screwed up one too many times and he screwed up majorly a lot. Calling for the toll roads in northern Kentucky on the even of the election was the straw that finally broke the camel’s back - the deep red northern Kentucky counties were instead colored very light red and in some cases very light blue. More than enough to have caused his margin of loss. Saying teachers demonstrating in Frankfort were causing children to be molested at home was where his support plummeted like a rock which made the race close when it otherwise would not have been.
