It still does not make sense that a NATO AWACS would be communicating with distributed forces no matter what you call it now. They’d have to hit some level of command like the article I cited references. To operate as you imply suggests a far greater involvement in preparation and coordination that would pre-date Russia’s invasion. The Ukraine was a NATO Aspirant, but they were not a full partner in NATO and wouldn’t have been involved with the battle intricacies at that level.
They started going to this until model back in the early 2000s, it was about delivering Intel directly to the field of combat.
