On the Historical Unity of Russians and Ukrainians by Vladimir Putin
The Kremlin ^ | July 12, 2021 | Vladimir Putin

"The throne of Kiev held a dominant position in Ancient Rus. This had been the custom since the late 9th century. The Tale of Bygone Years captured for posterity the words of Oleg the Prophet about Kiev, 'Let it be the mother of all Russian cities.' "

"Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians are all descendants of Ancient Rus, which was the largest state in Europe. Slavic and other tribes across the vast territory – from Ladoga, Novgorod, and Pskov to Kiev and Chernigov – were bound together by one language (which we now refer to as Old Russian), economic ties, the rule of the princes of the Rurik dynasty, and – after the baptism of Rus – the Orthodox faith. The spiritual choice made by St. Vladimir, who was both Prince of Novgorod and Grand Prince of Kiev, still largely determines our affinity today." - Vlad Putin, war criminal

Neo-Nazis, genocide of Russian-speakers, NATO are all window dressing. Vlad wants his empire.

Good God. Ukraine really is dealing with a mad man.

Everything Putin says screams delusion of grandeur. He's going to have his empire or die trying.

Yeah, and we’re all descended from Adam and Eve too. So what, Vlad? Still doesn’t give you the right to rule another country.

Who cares.

He’s a nut case.

Sounds as crazy as ChiComs.

Because once upon a time there were emperors and czars and kings and queens means one party or one regime has a right to dictate dominate and kill is not a sane belief.

Perfect harmony except that glitch in 1933 and 34.

Stalin did a good job of creating lasting enmity when he starved the Ukrainians not so very long ago. I would have looked for my first opportunity to leave, too.

Ethnically & linguistically, it’s true that Russians and Ukrainians are the same. For example, the Ukrainian language is less different from Russian than Cantonese is from Mandarin Chinese.

This doesn’t mean that Ukraine should be taken over by Russia.

Similarly, I would prefer that the US break up rather than be ruled by transnational corporatist progressives in both parties from DC and other coastal cities.

If there were in fact such a brotherhood of “Rus”, how come so many states that were in the U.S.S.R. got out the first chance they had? How come Russia needs to use extreme violence to bring them back in?

It seems to me that Putin has much larger goals than Ukraine.

Exactly.

Ethnically and linguistically, the US and Canada are the same. But I think We the People might have a problem with Canada invading the US.

I think he’s terminally ill and this is his attempt at a legacy.

I claim no esoteric knowledge like some other Freepers, just how I feel.

Well, also in 1169-1654, where it was disputed territory between Tatars, Lithuanians/Poles, Cossacks
Partially (the Cossack Hetmanate) 1654-1740’s?
And then 1918-21.
And 1941-45.

Kiev was a multi cathedral city when Moscow was a swamp. Russians come from the Mongols, Ukrainians from vikings ( in part both cases)

But the Ukrainian language is considerably more different from Russian (Lexical distance 38) than Ukrainian is from Polish (30).

https://bigthink.com/strange-maps/a-map-of-lexical-distances-between-europes-languages/

Based on this, Russian-Ukrainian is considerably more distant than Spanish is from Portuguese (30), and that gap is near-unintelligible to Spanish speakers, though less so for Portuguese speakers, due to peculiarities of Portuguese. And there is way more than enough bitter history between Spain and Portugal for the Portuguese to have made it clear they dont want anything to do with the Spanish.

Sounds to be Vlad is moving past the New York 10 week revolutionary influences of the Ukrainian born Russian Trotsky with that statement.

Showing once again we shouldn’t get deeply involved in countries with a millennium of baggage.

Well he certainly isn’t going to hand it over to a bunch of “hide in the dark” power hungry globalist, . The likes of which seem to have driven most of the initial comments, I actually went to make some fresh popcorn, I can’t wait till they try to say Putin is a flat earther or one of the lizard people ? But seriously , hands down , I’m thankful for the blessings of laughter it gives me to listen without having to hear them
