A retired fellow whom I used to work with in a former life worked for a well-known German company in Germany in the 1970s. We had a lot in common because I worked for a couple of well-known Japanese companies in Japan roughly 15 years later.

I told him that my conversations with colleagues who had lived through that time was an attitude of deep shame and regret. There was little nostalgia. Some even expressed gratitude that America had won the war because of the way we turned things around.

In contrast, he told me that the attitude of many of his colleagues was more like "How could this have gone so wrong? Those youth camps and parades were so inclusive and made us all feel like we were a part of something for the greater good."
