It was a fundraising campaign for ALS research. It would then be followed-up by a challenge for someone else to follow suit and raise more money. That was among people who actually knew each other as well.

After reading the article Im a little bit surprised this has caught on as many places as they claim. I suppose we have the internet and nation wide media to blame for that.
Historically it seemed that the idea of “practical jokes” was a special type of stupid reserved for those in particular who were living in the more North East part of the country. Elsewhere it was always just a good way to get beat up and ostracized from any group.
Clearly better parenting is generally needed but that doesnt mean its going to happen.
Open range paintball could get you shot, and deservedly so.
