As part of its deadly assault on Ukraine, Russia has taken the rare step to use intellectual property rights as a war tactic.
In early March, the Russian government issued a decree saying that Russian companies are no longer obliged to compensate owners of patents, utility models and industrial designs from “unfriendly” countries. These are the western states who have issued sanctions against Russia, including the UK and US.
This means that Russian businesses can use intellectual property, such as patented inventions or fashion designs, without having to pay or seek the consent of the rights holders. Affected companies cannot enforce their patents and designs against Russian imitators.
...
The sanctions have also led a Russian judge to dismiss a copyright and trademark infringement lawsuit brought by the British company that produces animated series Peppa Pig. Andrei Slavinsky said in court that the “unfriendly actions of the United States of America and affiliated foreign countries” influenced his decision.

It was announced exactly as you stated.
Of course not. If you are officially cut off from acquiring technology, the move makes perfect sense. Nothing stops you from industrial espionage and reverse engineering in this case, and you can use it all without royalty.
.
You’re thinking just like Putin, Russia can do whatever it wants and there will be no consequences!
Russia will soon learn the error in that logic
Sorry, don’t get your point. When a voke company is leaving your market for no particular reason, why regular consumers need to suffer? They don’t make political decisions.
All those strongly worded letters are filling up a lot of landfill. Bad for the environment. Brandon is risking luzing his enviroweenie voting bloc.
“It was announced exactly as you stated.”
I apologize. I missed that. I’m war-porned out. (Also, Fauci’d, shot-in-Chicago, trans-d and Covid’d-out.)
As a matter of fact, I may spend the rest of the day listening to fifty’s music and playing with my “new” 1952 Pontiac straight 8.
Doesn't seem to hurt china which does the same thing.
Exactly- obvious response from Russia. We would do the same
Not the same grasshopper. China gets constant updates from the companies that are manufacturing there.
Nice car:)
What, they thought they could sanction Russia to the sky and Russia wouldn’t respond? This is just tit for tat.
EXACTLY. This should not surprise anyone. The west drew first poor with the SWIFT action, that opened Pandora’s box.
My question is, when there is an cease fire and settlement, then what happens? Russian companies begin respecting patents and contracts again? Or will those contracts continue to be void?
Who deserted who here? If McD’s pulls out of my country and I own the restaurant, can I not continue in business, using locally sourced food? Same applies to licenses. Normally, the franchine holder pulls all these items back - except here, where they have broken the contact with the franchisee themselves.
Now Putin symps can move to Russia and open a “Trump” hotel without paying Donald a dime.
That already happened. They just turned the McDonalds logo sideways and called it Burger Land.
Russia not only has a paper tiger failed military, it’s economy is a failure, it’s culture is a failure and it’s political system is a culture.
as Russia becomes, bit-by-bit, more technology-backwards
————-
Well, going through DOD files, alerts and memos, I see the west alarmed at Russia’s high tech weapons, many of which the west has no defense from.
Having worked in Moscow for a few years, I can say I have seen more “ advanced technology “ items and systems in their society than the US.
The west seems to have no idea or concept on how quickly Russia advanced since 1991. Many here still think they have bread lines, fact is,
their food is amazingly cheap, ( prices compare to what we had in the early 2010 years) and guess what - No empty shelves or shortages.
It already went haywire with China. It already went haywire with patent trollism.
Shhh no one wants to hear that there are arbitrarily bright geniuses in Russia. Didn’t we just cancel them all anyway?
