Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) has died at age 88. The longest-serving member of the 117th Congress, who held the job for 48 years, had a reputation for being colorful, confrontational and often unpredictable.

Young often said he would stay in office until the Alaska voters or God decided otherwise, reported Alaska Public Media station KTOO.

Lobbyist Jack Ferguson, who was Young’s friend and his first chief of staff, confirmed the news Friday afternoon.

Ferguson said he was told by a representative of Alaska Airlines that Young died in an airport, but there were no other immediate details, according to KTOO.

LOL, the pun stars are on duty!

Young died in an airport...

CNN must be the prime suspect then.

I agree with you.

Its time that people make some decisions about who they are voting for. The nation has to decide if the rep that’s been in place for decades and is over 75 is really representing their constituents, or if they are just the “easy” vote.

The country is literally dying under the leadership of people who are in their late 70s and 80’s.

As individuals, this guy was probably a nice guy and I sent my condolences to his family. But someone in office for nearly 50 years is not good for the country.

This is why term limits MUST be enacted.

How can one identify what is an easy, bullshit job?

When one is “working” at age 88.

The new Dean of The House of Representatives in Hal Rogers of from Kentucky’s 5th district. He was elected in 1980 along with Ronald Reagan and took office on January 3, 1981. He is 84 years old. Other than the 55% he got in 1992, he has never done worse than 65% with six elections facing no opposition. Hal Rogers is running for reelection, why not, he is landslide Hal.

Chris Smith of New Jersey’s 4th district was also elected in the same election and assumed office on January 3, 1981.

“Members of the House are arranged by the number of terms they have served, before being arranged by the beginning date of their most recent continuous service. Where members have served the same number of terms and have the same date of service, they are arranged alphabetically by last name.”

So as has name comes after Hal’s, Hal get the bigger office.

Nancy Pelosi is seventh in seniority. Of the top 55 in seniority, 12 are Republicans (January 2001 or older).

When Young was in an education funding battle in 2007, he likened members of Congress to “the mink in my state that kill their own.” He went on: “There’s always another day when who that bite will be killed, too. And I am very good at that.”

Young entered politics as a mayor in 1964, five years after moving to the year old state. He advanced to the state legislature on his second try then advanced to the solo AK House seat on an unusual second try. He lost to the incumbent, Nick Begich (D) although a couple weeks before that election Begich disappeared, never to be seen again, in a presumed plane crash with Majority Leader Hale Biggs (D). After the missing victor was declared dead he won a special election to succeed him. It took a lot for a “D” seat to flip to “R” back then. Since then he’s been as reliable a Conservative vote as his old buddy, Murkowski’s, daughter.

A special election and likely fall rematch, on top of Murky trying to resteal her senate seat, will make AK politics unusually interesting and important this year. Trump needs to jump on this, identify someone good outside the old boy AK uniparty, and rally there. With the Biden energy policies it’s otherwise friends in that uniparty are vulnerable. The ‘gimme’ crowd will be wanting bigger AK petro$ commission checks so may be on our side for a change!
