In Putin's vision for the world, a medieval narrative resurfaces
CNN ^ | 3/14/22 | Delia Gallagher

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given several explanations for his country's war on Ukraine, and some are more plausible than others. They include stopping NATO's advance towards Russia's borders, protecting fellow Russians from "genocide" or the baseless claim of "de-Nazifying" Ukraine.

The top-ranking priest in the Russian Orthodox Church, meanwhile, has offered a very different reason for the invasion: gay pride parades. Patriarch Kirill said last week that the conflict is an extension of a fundamental culture clash between the wider Russian world and Western liberal values, exemplified by expressions of gay pride. Yet experts say that Kirill's comments offer important insights into Putin's larger spiritual vision of a return to a Russian Empire, in which the Orthodox religion plays a pivotal role.

The other mythology is that "gay pride" is part of Western liberal values. It isn't, it's just neo-communism seeking to destroy traditional liberal values.

Traditional Western liberal values means that gays are tolerated by not being stoned or burned at the stake.

Putin just wants to put the USSR back together. It’s that simple. He wants a legacy.

And why do we care what happens in Europe?

Washington in his farewell address warned us about getting involved in foreign adventurism.

Washington’s public political address warned against foreign influence in domestic affairs and American meddling in European affairs. He warned against bitter partisanship in domestic politics and called for men to move beyond partisanship and serve the common good. He warned against “permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world”, saying the United States must concentrate primarily on American interests. He counseled friendship and commerce with all nations, but warned against involvement in European wars and entering into long-term “entangling” alliances.

Gay prides marches are entangling alliances!

Dream on. They are not just tolerated or not stoned. They are feted, celebrated, revered, and held up to our children as shining examples. We fly the butthole sex flag from our embassy. The Brit spy chief said it was our biggest achievement and value we must protect. Half the TV commercials and shows push it right in your face.
We have a TV commercial for SeatGeek now with a talking butt in your face. In Russia if you enter a theater row it’s considered boorish to move to your seat putting your ass in people’s face, instead you face them as you move past.
He’s not wrong.

It is on the throne of western liberal values.

That just means our government and other institutions (even many supposedly Christian denominations) are captured by neo-communists, which I thought was pretty obvious.

One of the difficulties is now separating our illegitimate regime from the levers of power without yielding to Putin's neo-imperialism or the Chinese.

The point is, the weak and decadent West is in no shape to take on Russia.

Now, Poland, Hungary, Czech and Slovakia are not far gone yet to be able to give Russia a punch in the nose.

“And he’s supported by 70 percent of the Russian voting public....”

In the exact same way that Biden had the votes of 81 million Americans and 100% of the votes of Americans older than 120.

It's certainly not part of the majority beliefs in most Western countries. A couple hundred thousand people showed up even in Paris to oppose "gay" marriage.

The fact that such repulsive nonsense is enshrined by our governing class is just another sign of the extent to which Western governments have slipped out of democratic control.

Reminds me of an online argument many years ago where some idiot complained. "There's nothing worse than tyranny of the majority!" To which someone correctly responded, "Yes there is: tyranny by a minority."

Russia had a GDP equivalent to Spain.

Reminds me of the recent archaeological find in Germany of a large battle with the Roman army 200 miles from the Rhine frontier deep in Germany under Maximinus Thrax. Even in the throes of the Crisis of the Third Century the old Empire was a force to be reckoned with.

And why do we care what happens in Europe?

Because Europe controls slightly more than half of the GDP of the entire West. Abandon it, and all that wealth and technology subsidizes the Russian empire or China or both. It's simply geopolitical stupidity to walk away in a huff.

Are the Europeans cheating us by not doing more for defense? Sure, but they are simply incapable of mustering the political unity needed without US leadership, with or without the so called European "Union." This is also, by the way, partly our own doing. We backed France's colonial wars lukewarmly and then when both Britain and France acted together during Suez, we pressured them to stop. Why should the Europeans support world-class militaries only for them to be subject to American veto when they perceive their own vital interests at stake?

Another Putin mindreader from XiNN.

I'm going to put this out there:

WE don't know who is running our own country.

Putin knows.
