Men’s suits have been officially banished from the basket of goods and services in the country that invented them.
The U.K. Office for National Statistics said on Monday that men’s suits are being removed from the calculation of its consumer inflation gauges, along with doughnuts and coal.
Products that are being added include meat-free sausages, canned pulses, sports bras, pet collars and antibacterial surface wipes.
COVID-19 and the work-from-home revolution ended up being the final nail in the coffine for what’s been a slow decline for men’s suits, as casual wear had begun to permeate the office environment even before the pandemic.

The Brits have doughnuts?
And what the heck is a canned pulse? Energy drink?
canned pulses?..................
I’m surprised it took so long. When I was there in the late 80’s, and again in the early 2010’s, most British men I saw who wore suits, or even just a shirt and tie, looked as if they had slept in it.
Pretty much the same here.
Never liked wearing the things.
I have 20 suits, about 75 ties and 20 pairs of dress shoes. Also I have around 30 cotton dress shirts and two tuxedos. I have not worn them more than three times in 4 years. I also have 5 flannel shirts that I wear in the wisconsin winter. I were one almost every day if the temps are below 50. I have a similar outfit of short sleeve shirts for the summer. I miss the suits. They were easy. I stopped working 8 years ago.
pulse noun (2)
Definition of pulse (Entry 3 of 3)
: the edible seeds of various crops (such as peas, beans, or lentils) of the legume family
This is kind of an archaic definition. I first heard of it in old KJ English when the Hebrew captives young men including Daniel were prescribed a diet of meat but requested a vegetarian diet of “pulse” instead, and fared better on it.
Juice
My bad, I thought it was a juice but I see someone has answered already
?
And they weren't cheap. You could get a few good ones or a few more cheap ones. I sure don't miss the suit salesmen. It got to the point I only would buy one for funerals.
A pulse is a pea or a bean?
Why couldn’t they just say so?
And why remove a food staple from the inflation index?
Not enough rows on the spreadsheet?
Other questions?
Wear a suit on a whim out in public sometime just for the heck of it. You get treated differently, commands more respect. It really makes a huge psychological difference.
Or, for that matter, inflation basket?
Inflation basket - that wicker thing that hangs under a hot-air balloon.
Dressing well when traveling makes a difference.
Bring back the Beatle suit and I might buy one.
It makes a difference just about everywhere, actually.
Shame, one of my only wishes remaining has been obtaining a bespoke suit.
I trace the entire decline in western civilization to the relaxing and finally removing dress codes in schools. It was easy to spot (and smell) the radicals in those days.
