Under new, conservative president, South Korea is poised to adopt a more hawkish foreign policy

For the past five years, South Korea’s foreign policy decisions have been shaped with one goal in mind: peace with North Korea. Now, under an incoming conservative president, Yoon Suk-yeol, South Korea is poised to make a hawkish about-face that would reshape its relationship with not only North Korea but also the United States, China, Japan and nations beyond.

But despite its big dreams, South Korea under liberal president Moon Jae-in prioritized improving relations with North Korea, which sometimes meant it hedged or sat on the sidelines to avoid overly antagonizing China, North Korea’s economic lifeline. With progress on inter-Korean relations and North Korea’s denuclearization more elusive than ever, South Korea under Yoon is likely to dramatically change course, experts say.

A joint South Korean and Japanese nuclear weapons program could move pretty quickly, especially with Indian participation.

That would screw China.

“Under new, conservative president, South Korea...”

He can start being conservative by removing his mask.

I agree that it’s a good deal, but it’s usually preferred to remove the ads when posting.

Bingo! The South Koreans and Japanese each need an Independent nuclear retaliatory capability. A Japanese or South Korean bomb with a Korean or Japanese finger on the button. No alliance strings that would stop either from independently reacting to China. Check the reasons de Gaulle build his Force de Frappe in the sixties. de Gaulle knew not to assume the US would commit nuclear suicide to keep the Soviets out of Paris. It would be great to see this happen yesterday. Xi knows our only credible deterrence to him walking into Taipei was economic. After Trump, that capability was pi$$ed away. Any hint that Taiwan was following this route would result in an immediate invasion though.

If Korea and Japan had nuclear weapons, the world would not know about them. They would be secret

Perhaps they are secret

The only reason they would have them would be to DETER China. Any use of them would be suicidal for both and China. There is zero deterrence to China if the Chinese don’t know they’re there. Dr. Strangelove said it best, “Why didn’t you tell the world, eh?!”.
