Its how Richard Engel got his job with NBC; he went to live in Baghdad before GW Bush began his war with Shtick and Awe. The bombing began and NBC had no one on site so there was Engel; he did a credible job but like most who join that network became one-sided political after that.
This reminds me of that journalist that was made such a big deal of who was killed in the ME. They made it sound like he was the firstborn son and then it came out that he only occasionally contributed articles after the stories started coming out.
A journalist is not more important than a citizen casualty. IMO.
And this guy was carrying credentials around that falsely identified himself as working for US media.
Oh it was a Russian Troop who shot him! So the Russian did not know the New York Times is the American Pravda.

He was a filmmaker. He has made several films about war zones - Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. He was using the NYT press credentials because I don’t think “filmmaker” credentials would give him any access or cover.
O.K. then, he knew the incredible risk he was putting himself in to.
What would a New York Times employee be doing there. Everyone knows they do not investigate their articles. They either make them up entirely or just repeat something from the web without bothering to verify it as long as it fits their narrative.
I’m fascinated by how the Press covers the death of one of their own, they seem to get more Pomp and Circumstance out of a single death than 99 Marines who get killed over the course of several months, which I think is unfortunate.
Next thing you know they’ll be lying in state, flag at half mast and I’m sure we’ll get a report every night for about a week or so on the death of these two courageous and valiant news reporters.

When I see a story like that I assume the guy is working as a covert operative for a government intelligence outfit — either the CIA or a foreign counterpart.

He had done some job for the NYT in 2015. He was a cameraman not a reporter. His latest job I got from IMDB was a documentary series following a college football team “Our Time UCF Knights Football” in 2021.
