A British biotech firm this week got the green light from U.S. regulators to release over 2 million genetically modified mosquitoes in Florida and California as part of an expanded effort to combat transmission of diseases like Zika, dengue fever and canine heartworm.
The experimental public health effort, which still requires final approval from state regulators, follows the 2021 release of 144,000 genetically modified mosquitoes in the Florida Keys by British biotech firm Oxitec.
Oxitec said its genetically modified male, and thus non-biting, mosquitoes "find and mate with invasive female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, mediating a reduction of the target population as the female offspring of these encounters cannot survive," thus reducing the overall population.
In a news release announcing approval from the Environmental Protection Agency, Oxitec described its release in Florida in 2021 as a "success."
"Given the growing health threat this mosquito poses across the U.S., we’re working to make this technology available and accessible," Grey Frandsen, CEO of Oxitec said, adding that the company will now apply for approval from California and Florida regulators.

Has this type of release ever gone right , Starlings , Rabbits etc etc etc
Ha...I had not thought of that for years!!! Thanks.
Last year on east coast was absolutely miserable with mosquitos- the whole dang summer practically. It was mega bad that year. It was so,bad It affected tourist season pretty significantly. You just couldn’t be out and about for any length of time and there were literally clouds of mosquitos around anyone that was. I’ve never seen it that bad, and I was an outdoors person growing up and could deal, with mosquitoes, black flies, no see ‘ums, deer flies, horse flies etc. We used to get bad black fly seasons, but last year the mosquito population trumped any bad black lfy seaso. We ever had.
Th3y will evolve into vampire bats
Lol.i saw that movie
144,000 mosquitos were released in 2021.
Who counts the mosquitos before shipping? How are they counted? Do they stay still while being counted? Is that count double checked by another counter? Maybe 144 counters have 1000 mosquitos to count?
I heard they just weigh them and divide by the average mosquito weight. ;-)
Hide your beagles. Fauci is working an airborne Jab. These sociopaths never stop doubling down.
I believe the purpose of skeeters is to SPREAD DISEASE! Mother Nature always finds a way to control the species, and this is another way.
I just release non genetically modified Guinea Hens. Two weeks and you won’t have a mosquito, roach, flea, fly, or tick, on your property. They roost in the trees and stay within a hundred yards or so if you keep fresh water and a small amount of chicken feed nearby. A dozen will debug about 5 acres in short time.
The larvae stage of the mosquito is vital in the aquatic food chain. Don’t screw with nature.
Well, roadrunners find baby rattlesnakes very tasty.
So breed more roadrunners.
Being on the west coast I had no idea. You need more bats. Bats are our friends. A bat box can hold up to 100 bats. Each bat eats 1000 mosquitos a night. Put one high up on your house, south facing. Once the bats find it, living outdoors without screens is possible.
We have plenty of bats, and purple Martin’s too which I believe eat mosquitos too. We were just really overrun with mosquitos last year like, imhave never seen before, which was odd too, because it was a quite cold spring and early summer. They stayed around a lot g time too, longer than Usual. They were so bad they drove people off the beaches (those that didn’t swim to escape them)
We now have the ability to complete drive mosquitos to extinction.
They are afraid to do that because they don't know what all mosquitos do. For example, I was reading one of these articles when I learned that mosquitos were/are the main food source for hummingbirds.
That is just crazy. Please keep those critters on the east coast.
“Once the bats find it, living outdoors without screens is possible.”
Well...except for the bats flying around your head at dusk.
I'd never heard of such a thing. Had to google it. Trade skeeter bites for possibility of rabies.
I feel like I've stumbled onto a dystopian movie set.
Insect bats won’t bite you. A better chance of getting rabbits from a racoon or dog.
