By not identifying at least the race of the student involved, the school is pretty much ensuring that whatever lessons are to be learned from this are going to be the wrong ones.

Bingo. They are saying “racists are in our midst and we need anti-racist (i.e., racist) training to stamp it out” — regardless of the perp being black.

"By not identifying at least the race of the student involved, the school is pretty much ensuring that whatever lessons are to be learned from this are going to be the wrong ones."
It'll be a variant of Dan Rather's "fake, but true" approach: "Even though in this case the messages were not real, this incident demonstrates that students of color still feel oppressed by the white-supremacist paradigm that dominates this country. Therefore, the student will face no disciplinary action and we will increase our commitment to equity and diversity."
