There’s one simple fact - if ‘it’ CAN be done SOMEBODY will do ‘it’ and it’s incredibly naïve to think that people in our own government are too ‘ethical’ to not do ‘it’.

With whatever is biologically possible I highly doubt we’re refraining from experimenting with it.

Actually, some research involving certain microbiological organisms is a crime and/or restricted by treaty and international law. I never had need to get in depth on this and legal aspects were limited to a very brief mention in one of my first microbiology classes. The context was in terms of lab and personal safety and proper lab procedures. A full blown jump into the legal issues though was not something in the scope of our curriculum.

In my professional career, it was sufficient to know that there were lines not to cross. There are speed bumps so to speak that serve as check points where things like professional competence, facility infrastructure and justification come into play. I purposely structured my work to not hit a speed bump and equipped the lab with procedures and equipment to protect ourselves and others if we stumbled into anything extraordinary from the wild in the course of the work.
