Of course we had a choice. But we accepted that having Russian troops in Cuba was legal as long as they weren’t nuclear capable. That was our position with respect to Cuba for decades, which is why your point about the Cuban Missile Crisis somehow meaning that Ukraine can’t join NATO was so completely backwards.

I didn't bring up the Cuban Missile Crisis. Perhaps that was another poster. I'm just saying we tried to invade a sovereign nation (before the CMC) and when that failed, we attempted to assassinate the head of state multiple times. For what reason? Because they aligned with the commies? Because they nationalized companies that were owned by Americans? Is that a good enough reason to invade a country?

I'm not saying Russia has the right to invade Ukraine. It just seems that powerful nations can make up any excuse to go to war with less powerful nations. The US is no exception, and I don't think the other poster's analogy of using Cuba is necessarily out of line.

The analogy made by the other poster was that if we wouldn't tolerate Russian nuclear missiles in Cuba, Russian shouldn't have to tolerate a Ukraine allied with other nations.

For the reasons I gave, that's pretty cracked reasoning.
