Will a mass transition to electric vehicles (EVs) cause the electric power grid to collapse? Some argue that EVs will make the grid unstable, which could mean hefty investments to upgrade existing infrastructures in order to withstand the electricity uptake

Here is the actual break down by sector and fuel type for February 2020.

Natural gas dominates the USA grid. Coal ,nukes and renewables have equal shares. This is actual kWh generated and delivered to the grid not installed capacity. It’s an important distinction.

https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=427&t=3

Of.note as natural gas prices climb dual fuel plants switch back to coal coal was under 18% until January 2022 now it’s above 20% having taken NG down some.

Or the people on the street might figure out how to take some juice for power, if they are bright enough and somehow also had one of those battery packs.

“All those people who have to,park on the street?”

Really good point—I was thinking about Boston (and most New England cities for that matter)—the vast majority of folks park on the street.

The elites may live in fancy condos that get electric charging stations placed in their garages—but the “average folks” will be totally &^%$ed.

Yeah, I didn’t think about that part. I currently have a pavilion or roof over my car, but it’s not going to keep the car from getting cold. Better than letting snow fall on the car though.

“And what is the source of the electricity needed to charge the batteries?”

AOC rubs a balloon on her head🤷‍♂️

I always read threads like these, from back to front. Crazy that no one has said this upthread. Told my significant other this last night - ev cars allow the govt to control how far Americans can drive - strictly from one charging station to another. And if they decide to shut them down - we are not going anywhere.
Gas vehicles/owners can stockpile to a greater or lesser extent - so long as the powers that be allow gas to be sold that is 😑

Glad I did electronic technician night school in the 1970’s and electrical engineering in the late 1980’s.
This article tries to tell me that additional load on the grid is not additional load on the grid.

FAIL.
Rainbow-colored unicorns don’t exist either.

Still doesn’t solve my problem. I would love to have one but like I said half the time I reach for the phone and find it dead or nearly dead. I know Elon Musk is a genius so I’m waiting until he come out with a model that will take itself to a charging station.

Since I’m mostly retired, I don’t drive a lot but when I do I want to hear that engine turn instead of a voice that says “sorry, you forgot to charge me”

“Musk is a genius so I’m waiting until he come out with a model that will take itself to a charging station.”

With a bit of luck they will come out with a self driving car that plugs itself into it’s docking station when it brings me back from the grocery store: about the time they take away my drivers license because of age.

But I don’t think the grid can handle EVs for everyone just now.

Yup—that is my plan as well—self-driving cars would be great for “post driver’s license” oldsters.

Until then—nope.

Well I’m still working from home. I worked so hard all my life that I assumed I would never live past 70. Apparently God has a really great sense of humor since I’m long past that one.

But I consider myself lucky since I have everything I need. Not everything I want mind you, but all my needs are covered......for now.
