I recall reading about how in states like Montana, if you were caught doing more than 55, the officer would likely give you a one dollar ticket that was good for the whole day, lol.

The HP was everywhere, chasing speeders going 61 instead of the mass murderers that were everywhere. Nixon sealed his fate with that stupid stunt. All kinds of country songs came out about it, but “Convoy” and “The White Knight” were the biggest.

I lived in Montana from 1977 - 1979. IF you were caught speeding (during the day) the fine/bond was $5.00 payable to the Highway Patrol officer right then. You did NOT have to go to court and it did not go on your record.

There were different rules for night. You could pay several $$$ per mile over the limit at night.

They used to let you crack a cold beer when you reached Top of the World Pass, as you pressed on toward (or coming from) Yellowstone.

Fact, you used to be able to drink a beer or other beverage of your choice as long as you were deemed sober, by a cop, usually.
