Suffering goes on in encircled Mariupol as evacuation fails

MARIUPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Corpses lie in the streets of Mariupol. Hungry people break into stores in search of food and melt snow for water. Thousands huddle in basements, trembling at the sound of Russian shells pounding this strategic port city.

“Why shouldn’t I cry?” Goma Janna demanded as she wept by the light of an oil lamp below ground, surrounded by women and children. “I want my home, I want my job. I’m so sad about people and about the city, the children.”

A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in this encircled city of 430,000, and Tuesday brought no relief: An attempt to evacuate civilians and deliver badly needed food, water and medicine through a designated safe corridor failed, with Ukrainian officials saying Russian forces had fired on the convoy before it reached the city.

Nearly two weeks into the invasion, the Russians have advanced deep along Ukraine’s coastline in what could establish a land bridge to Crimea, which Moscow seized from Ukraine in 2014. Mariupol, which sits on the Azov Sea, has been surrounded by Russian soldiers for days.

Mariupol, said Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, is in a “catastrophic situation.”

Looks like harassment fire. Like the NVA used to do at night. Pop a few mortar rounds every once in awhile and keep ‘em awake all night.

They are keeping people from using the humanitarian corridors, using people as human shields, even planting mines, and we just sent them more weapons.

Life is good for a Nazi .

Well, the proper Ukranian response would have been to evacuate military forces and declare it an open city. Same with Kiev.

One either cares about territory or civilian lives in modern urban warfare.

The whining for an “evacuation route” is so the Azov nazis can have an escape and resupply route through the developing salient. Russians are moving in and about to cut them off from both sides. It’s looking like one of those moves they did 30 plus times on the eastern front in WWII. The nazis spent too much time preccupied with the Russians directly in front of them.
They should have read a WWII eastern front history book.

For legit humanitarian, the Russians are allowing them into Russia and Belarus to proceed to wherever. But the line of communication between Maripol and Kharkov is closed.

There were videos on the net of the Nazi Azov battalion shooting at civilians attempting to flee. They were stopping women and old people, everybody from leaving. The Greek press interviewed some old Greek man living there (this city has an ethnic Greek enclave of like 120k) and he says people were afraid to leave, the Azov battalion would kill them.

Yeah but those civilian hostages are the only thing standing between the Asov brigade and justice.

Retired General Keane said Russia has never kept a cease fire in any war.

Azov got caught with their pants down, and now they are stuck in eastern Ukraine and cannot evacuate. General Paulus would know what they are facing. And there is no air fleet coming to relieve them.

Really, wiping out the nazis would be best for everyone including the Kiev government. Then they could conclude agreements and not have to worry about Das Reich rolling back into Kiev.

Obliterating them is the fastest way to end the war and get my fuel prices back down.

For some odd reason I have been hit with sanctions because of Russia.

Is Keane right about Russia never keeping a cease fire?

They don’t seem to be this time over the evacuation corridors.

A lot of propaganda on this thread. My viewpoint is neutral. Putin is a thug but I am an American. We have to do what's in the interest of this country, not Ukraine.

My point is that we'll find out more as time goes on. A lot of this is just noise.

The other side of the coin

Russian gains in Donbas and tactical pause in northeast: twelfth day of operations in Ukraine

South Front
2022-03-07 08:11:00

The last few days were marked by active offensive operations of Russian forces in the region of Donbas as well as a new demonstration of the anti-human posture of the Kyiv government towards its own citizens.

On March 5 and 6, Russia and the DPR made two attempts to evacuate civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha. Mariupol is fully surrounded by Russian forces and people’s militia of Donbas, while Volnovakha remains blocked from the south, east and west. The northern route from it is under fire control of the Russians.

Nevertheless, in both cases, Ukrainian units denied the evacuation via the humanitarian corridor towards Zaporizhzhya. At the same time, they opened fire at people that tried to leave towards the territory controlled by Russia and the DPR.

In the evening of March 6, active offensive operations in the area were resumed. The advance on Mariupol was developed from the northern and eastern directions. Intense clashes erupted in Volnovakha. DPR units control about half of the town and now work to eliminate its remaining garrison.

The third direction of the advance in this area of operations was the town of Gulyaipole and surrounding settlements. On the evening of March 6, Russian forward units entered the town after a series of artillery strikes on military objects and positions of Kyiv’s forces. This became another success in the operation to deny the ability of Ukrainian units to withdraw towards Zaporizhzhya from their positions west and southwest of Donetsk city.

Comment: While Russia is trying to help and evacuate civilians, the nazi Ukrainian forces are using them as a human shield and that is why they don’t let them evacuate.

Russia can halt offensive right away if Kiev agrees to Moscow’s terms

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters on Tuesday that Russia’s military offensive against Ukraine will stop “in a moment” if Kiev meets several key conditions. Russia wants Ukraine to enshrine neutrality in its constitution, acknowledge Crimea as Russian, and recognize Donetsk and Lugansk republics as independent states.

“They should make amendments to their constitution according to which Ukraine would reject any aims to enter any bloc,” Peskov said.
