McDonald’s will temporarily close 850 restaurants in Russia, nearly 2 weeks after Putin invaded Ukraine

McDonald’s announced Tuesday it will temporarily close 850 locations in Russia, nearly two weeks after Russian forces invaded Ukraine.

CEO Chris Kempczinski wrote in a letter to franchisees and employees that the chain will pause all operations in Russia. However, it will continue to pay its 62,000 Russian employees, and its Ronald McDonald House Charities will continue to operate.

In recent days, the fast-food giant has drawn criticism for staying silent on the war, given its relatively large Russian footprint. McDonald’s restaurants in Russia and Ukraine account for 2% of its systemwide sales, roughly 9% of its revenue and 3% of its operating income.

McDonald’s has long played a symbolic role in Russia as well. The chain opened its first location in the Soviet Union 32 years ago in Moscow, months before the state collapsed.

About 84% of McDonald’s Russian locations are owned by the company, while the rest are operated by franchisees.

...and, instantly, thousands of workers lose their jobs. They have no voice in the Russian policies of Putin. Once again, the peasants are royally screwed by their leaders.

The post says that McDonalds will continue to pay the wages of the employees despite closing their restaurants so those “peasants” will not suffer a financial loss at the hand of their crazed leader, Putin!

Trying to figure out what you mean by this.

Franchisees own their stores and likely lease the land from themselves or other parties. You certainly have to already be wealthy to buy in. Last time i looked it was something like 2 million dollars to buy a franchise license. Usually some very wealthy person in an area owns all the McD’s. McD’s corp makes TONs of money off the franchise fees, marketing materials, and selling the McD’s products to the franchisees, who are essentially a captive audience. I don’t think McD’s corporation owns more than a few stores these days.

McDonalds will permanently lose 850 business locations in Russia to competitors willing to feed actual people.

If that is truly your experience, I think I figured out your bigger problem....you may need to move. Did it ever cross your mind it is where you live, not the McDonald’s itself?

” There isn’t one in Memphis with its doors open as of today.”

Tripadvisor/google says there’s 3 of them in the city. You mean they’re all closed?

However, it will continue to pay its 62,000 Russian employees, and its Ronald McDonald House Charities will continue to operate.

So without that revenue stream how will the continue to do that? Surely they won't they raise prices in other markets?

From elsewhere:
“Russian has already been cut off from CNN, Pornhub, and Facebook. The US is now working on depriving Russians of MacDonalds and Coca-Cola. If they keep going with these sanctions, Russians will soon become among the healthiest,
well adjusted and best informed people on the planet. “

Nothing but the drive thru. The employees won’t open the restaurant doors. The consequences of “The Shutdown”. Now the staff won’t open the dining area and unlock the doors. The public is kept outside like cattle in drive thru lanes. The level of service is controlled by a single lane window. If you find sitting in a line for 45 minutes for your egg mcmuffin and coffee, that’s on you.

Considering supply chain capacity issues these days and shortages, I’m sure McDonald’s is taking advantage of this crisis to redirect its raw materials and revenue to elsewhere. I’m sure stores in Asia outside Russia can use those raw materials and supplies to maximize their revenues and level of service.

I was in Moscow in ‘95. McDonalds was one of the few places one could find good food.

Revenue flows in. You can’t redirect revenue. Investment capital maybe, not revenue.

Have they made a permanent decision to stop doing business in Russia?

Will other big retail businesses follow McDonald’s lead.
