EU to commit to phasing out dependency on Russian energy

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union is seeking to fully phase out its dependency on Russian energy “well before 2030” to ensure the 27-nation bloc no longer faces difficult decisions about hurting their own economies in geopolitical crises like the invasion of Ukraine.

The EU leaders meet in Versailles outside Paris for a two-day summit starting Thursday and will be working on ways to reduce their dependency on Moscow for fossil fuels.

“We agreed to phase out our dependency on Russian gas, oil and coal imports,” said a draft of the summit declaration seen by The Associated Press.

At the same time, the European Commission already has proposals to make it happen. The EU’s executive arm said its measures “can reduce EU demand for Russian gas by two-thirds before the end of the year” as a first step.

“We must become independent from Russian oil, coal and gas,” commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement. “We simply cannot rely on a supplier who explicitly threatens us.”

Already committed to the rapid development of renewables because of climate change, they will accelerate the process now to buttress their political independence, too.

The EU needed to “dash into renewable energy at lightning speed,” said Frans Timmermans, commission executive vice president in charge of its effort to reduce climate emissions.

Greta is an unwitting stooge for Russian anti-energy propaganda in the West.

EU says check is in the mail. This war where the US has no vital national security interest will be over in a few days or few weeks and it is back to business as usual with Europe and Russia

Meanwhile, all the lights are on, and the party is in full swing at Chez Soros and Chez Schwab...

LOL, see...WE make that translation immediately in our minds.

Leftists say “Oh! Goody! Then...government will supply us with something to fill the gap! It will take care of us! It’s all good!”

They are idiots.

Yes, I can say that with certainty.

The Germans in particular were one the worlds leaders in nuclear technology. They decided to become energy independent and were on that path with W. Brandt and then H. Schmidt (leaders of the past) focusing on nuclear power. The lessons of the oil embargo and oil shocks were “lessons learned.”

They managed to destroy their domestic nuclear program.

They managed to make themselves MORE energy dependent on nations that have differing political/national agenda's. Today they depend on the Middle East, Russia, and believe it of not, all the way to Australia (at least for a little while).

Then they dangle some bullshit wind turbines and solar panels out there which every German politician wants to have pictures in front of, but everyone also knows that these are pipe dreams that will NEVER deliver the amount of power needed, cheaply and reliably. Meanwhile, they push to shut down their last nuclear power plants.

https://www.bundesregierung.de/breg-de/suche/drei-atomkraftwerke-vom-netz-1991348 (They are proud of this, they wear like a badge of honor)

Hint: Germany is an industrial nation with a massive metal industry. It's a place that has an enormous energy demand, i.e. aluminum, steel, assembly plants, logistics... They are as far North as Maine (solar - forget it). They do not have the hydro capability of a Norway and it wouldn't be enough anyway. The only real green power available to them which is economical and somewhat practical is wind. They might squeeze some more out, but even that has a limit and it is not cheap nor entirely reliable. The ONLY real alternative they have, if they want energy independence, is nuclear. Duh-

Instead of shutting plants down, they should have been building more of them!

Or it goes the other way. We get involved followed by China. That seems to be what our government, the media and a lot of FReepers want.

Yeah, it’s like they dusted off Trump’s European energy policy/NATO checklist. Everyone knew he was right back then, but they had to reject him because Orange Man Bad.
