WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has decided to ban Russian oil imports, toughening the toll on Russia’s economy in retaliation for its invasion of Ukraine, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The move follows pleas by Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy to U.S. and Western officials to cut off the imports, which had been a glaring omission the massive sanctions put in place on Russia over the invasion. Energy exports have kept a steady influx of cash flowing to Russia despite otherwise severe restrictions on its financial sector.
Biden was set to announce the move as soon as Tuesday, the person said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter before an announcement. The White House said Biden would speak Tuesday morning to announce “actions to continue to hold Russia accountable for its unprovoked and unjustified war on Ukraine.”
The U.S. will be acting alone, but in close consultation with European allies, who are more dependent on Russian energy supplies. Natural gas from Russia accounts for one-third of Europe’s consumption of the fossil fuel. The U.S. does not import Russian natural gas.
Biden had explained his reluctance to impose energy sanctions at the outset of the conflict two weeks ago saying that he was trying “to limit the pain the American people are feeling at the gas pump.”
The news of his decision Tuesday was first reported by Bloomberg.

We’re gonna be dead sooner
“the American voters, all of them, need to get Joe Biden impeached immediately”
Good luck with that. Democrats, whom you’ve just so eloquently described, control both chambers.
The Ukes, G-d bless ‘em, managed to oust their gang of scoundrels in 90 days back in the winter of ‘13-14. I’ve been watching Winter on Fire on Netflix, and according to the footage, they were just plain awesome. The Founders would have been proud to shake their hands.
Running up RT1 in Illinois this am has is from 4.09 to 4.59. I expect 5.00 by the end of the month
He probably has already said it quietly, in back channel communication. On TV would be lovely, but Biden would say it’s Russian mis-information and use it as a pretext to NOT help. Putin is his sugar daddy. Ukraine was just the country that he bullied with promises of aid that were never delivered, unless you count pillows and blankets. Brandon is Putin’s butt boy, and has been for years.
fixed it.
5 dollar a gallon gas in the heartland, here we come!
Just like joek's puppetmaster Bammy wanted the whole time.
And the NWO & WEF Elites smile behind the curtain...
Ran out this morning and tried to beat the price spike, but already missed it. Up 40cents since Sunday.
Yes oil is fungible and can be transported to many places, but it will take time to rebalance the shipping from one place to another. It also can significantly affect refineries that are tuned or specific to one range of crude oil properties.
Fertilizer is the one I’m really concerned about. Our farmland is mostly just a medium for hyydroponics. The nutrients in the soil are not much. I just grow grass for hay and cows. My native hay fields require to be fallow for one or two out of three seasons or fertilized every season to sustain decent hay production. There is manure and rotation but that does not fully supplant fertilizer. Fertilizer prices last year were heart stopping, this year is at least three times worse. We won’t be fertilizing this year and we won’t be cutting hay either. I’ll still need to apply herbicide and mow the whole thing twice to put nutrients back into the soil. Fuel for mowing will be more than double last year’s cost not to mention lubricants. I can’t even find Rotella motor oil in bulk but still have some laid back in store but not for long. I have a year’s hay production in reserve. I’ve got to start deciding when I am going to dump cows if things don’t get better and I expect they won’t.
The clown show in DC has pushed us into a deep ditch.
Will they kill the EV and not even realize it
As he announced any plans to increase our production or open up the keystone pipeline?
I would not doubt for one moment that the environazis in his administration are behind this move. They want the price to be as high as possible to “convince” people to go electric.
The EU is going to ban Russki oil in 10 months. LOL.
I don’t trust the GoP any more than I trust the Democrats. They’re all on the same bus just sitting on different sides of it. They do not care about us. All they care about is their next election cycle and how well they can LIE.
the american federal government bureaucracy corrupts Every Little Thing. It has been demonstrated that there is no path to reformation. It must be destroyed along with the ideas and the people who corrupted it. The current government is no longer by consent. The elections are rigged and then the results are installed under military protection.
They don’t care about us.
And they’ll also plant a tree and put a noose on it, and make Putin wear it until it grows high enough to hang him./s
Why not just withdraw his opposition to the Israeli-Cyprus pipeline? That can get natural gas to Europe lickety-split.
All bite me needs to do is okay the drilling permits....but he won’t.🙄
This is a really bad joke
The American companies that buy Russian oil already announced they had ceased purchasing the oil and gas and what’s more abandoned all projects and holdings in Russia.
Biden actually did nothing.
I am trying to figure out who is more suicidal: Putin, or these idiots in Washington. Not that I oppose ending imports of Russian oil: We never should have imported a drop in the first place. But, the idea that by now we have to import any from other than perhaps Canada or Mexico is ludicrous, and even that should not be necessary. Keystone can be exported to push down world oil prices - we have plenty capacity if we just act with a hint of intelligence. Even Elon Musk has it right, even though it might hurt his Tesla sales.
One other thing: Maybe we can all encourage gas station owners and managers to get in on a push for more domestic supply. I’ve already seen a couple instances of customers being offensive to clerks about these prices, which are not the gas stations’ and certainly not their staff’s fault. I think this can be defused by stations themselves putting on every pump, window, and register, signs and stickers advocating increasing US gas and oil production. The big gas and oil companies should run ads too. Even truckers can contribute (rolling billboards, really).
Somebody can make a fortune with bumper stickers along this line.
And so on.
Don’t let the bastards wreck us: Putin or Biden!
Well, I think it'd take longer than "lickety-split", but, we should be pushing, not opposing that pipeline, anyway. Throw Turkey some other bone.
What would really be lickety-split would be any announcement of future intent, whether with regards to reopening Keystone, stop opposing Israel-Cyprus, or just allowing more drilling. These sorts of announcements strongly effect the commodities markets, because expectations for the future do move prices. For example, when Bush 43 announced promoting the use of more organic diesel, Corn futures went through the roof.
