Conscription of men of fighting age to defend their country against invasion has been around for hundreds of years. It’s only in our time that we can afford to have a volunteer only army and only because we have managed to maintain a (shrinking) technological edge against our adversaries.
Putin cause "to unite the people of Ukraine with Russia is so compelling" that he has to invade a country, kill people kill civilians, chase away several million woman and children out of their homes and destroy cities.
