KHARKIV, Ukraine - In a downtown government office building, men and women in military fatigues carried rocket-propelled grenades through hallways lined with ornate white crown molding. Others had AK-47s with loaded clips slung over the shoulders. Sandbags rested along windows - protection in case of potential blasts.

One of the city’s public buses pulled up to the building. There were hundreds of boxes of bullets inside. ...

Ukraine’s Territorial Defense, which is believed to have more than 130,000 volunteers, has been conducting weekend training sessions for months in preparation to help defend its turf from Russia. Now that the attack has started, Ukrainians across the country are mobilizing and turning to the Territorial Defense to arm them and send them into the fight. Anyone between 18 and 60 can join.

This is from a week ago. I heard from people with relatives there that they were requiring men 16 to 60 to join the militia, and accepting older and younger and women. They are giving them semi-automatics and grenades and launchers, and some training. Could make it more difficult to take cities like Kiev/Kjiv, but also may provoke the Russians to fire on civilians. This is basically from the Washington Post, but it should not be innacurate.

Passing out weapons because you’re only allowed guns for hunting....not personal protection.

In the article someone mentions, his only experience was shooting cans with an air rifle, probably all he was allowed. However, they are passing out AK-47s and rocket propelled grenades. In Switzerland, most men are in the militia and are given semiautomatic weapons, but not many in this country have weapons like that.

I was very surprised recently while traveling through several former Soviet Eastern European countries. The stores and street vendors sold toy weapons everywhere just as the USA did in the 1960’s. The toys were imitations of AK-47’s, Uzi’s, and just about every current military weapon. The gun mindset is strong and accepted.

Air guns that are replicas of just about every gun ever made are sold in stores on the main streets, next to all the other stores.

I remember when the Woolworth’s Five and Dime, and Newberry’s Department Store had trash cans filled with WWII surplus rifles for $3, $5, and $7, based upon condition, on display right as you entered the store. I, as a very young child was allowed to pull them out and look at them.

The trip through Eastern Europe was like revisiting my childhood. We had guns everywhere, many loaded, just sitting against the wall or behind the door. No one thought anything was wrong with it.

100% agree with your post.

I see the desire for freedom causing revolutions in many Communist countries, including China, as the soul of the people desires to grow through the equivalent of a teenager rebelling against their parents to get freedom.

I couldn’t agree more. These Russian filth and that KGB mongoloid who sent them into Ukraine will learn the hard way the Ukrainian people will not lay down without a bitter fight. Just as in Afghanistan, Russia will not prevail in a protracted quagmire that’s taking shape. Does anyone really believe the Ukes haven’t studied the tactics of the militias in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Why don't we round up the 20 million illegal aliens in this country, give them a rifle, and send them to the Ukraine? I would be for that.

there was some discussion of this today, with the discussion antagonist proposing that civilians with guns weren’t combatants so could be considered they were using the non-armed (children/females) as ‘human shields’ and residences and office buildings were fair game. However, since there’s a presidential order (18-60 will remain and fight), and the militia are flagged with yellow armbands, all are legal combatants under presidential order. Russians better figure out fast they’re not in Allepo any more.

I wonder what the reaction would have been if Russia had invaded, say, Sweden, with its now sizable minority population of Middle Eastern and African economic refugees, living fat off of the Swedish welfare state.

Ignoring now how the West would have reacted: Would the Slavic invaders have been welcomed by the Muslims, or not?

Would the remaining Swedes have mounted a defense, or not?

Would anyone have thought to hand out rifles, or not?

tired&retired: A small price to pay for FREEDOM.

Yeah, resisting the Russian invaders might trigger them - and we can't have that, now, can we? And won't giving the Ukrainians weapons just "fan the flames of White Supremacy and exacerbate White Fragility?"

Important questions for the times in which we live!

And that’s why the Second Amendment calls for a well-regulated (trained, for those in Rio Linda) militia. Report to the town common for drill.
