GENEVA -- The U.N.'s top human rights body overwhelmingly approved a resolution Friday that aims to set up a three-member panel of experts to monitor human rights in Ukraine.
Some 32 of the 47 member states of the U.N. Human Rights Council voted in favor of the resolution while 13 abstained. Only Russia and Eritrea voted against the resolution that was proposed by Western states and others who have spoken out against the invasion.
Several countries that had either openly or tacitly supported Moscow appeared to have backed off from offering that support.
China, Cuba and Venezuela abstained Friday, despite having joined Russia and Eritrea in voting down on Monday a proposal by Ukraine's government to hold an “urgent debate” on the rights situation in Ukraine. The debate took place Thursday and culminated in Friday’s vote.
Mauritania, Senegal, Somalia, and the United Arab Emirates which abstained Monday supported the resolution on Friday.

“I wouldn't say that we are isolated,” Gennady Gatilov, Russia's ambassador in Geneva, told the U.N. Geneva press association ACANU after the vote. He accused the United States and Western allies of putting “pressure” on many countries.
Gatilov said “history will show who is right" when asked whether the countries that condemned Russia's invasion were on the wrong side of history.
The council’s resolution seeks the “immediate operationalization” of a three-person team of experts known as a Commission of Inquiry – the council’s most powerful tool of scrutiny. Its members are to be appointed by U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet.
The experts will be tasked to collect and analyze evidence that could be used by a court, such as the International Criminal Court, which has launched its own investigation over Russia’s invasion.

Nothing illustrates the utter superfluous of the UN like this.
Supposedly the UN exists to preclude these things from happening in the first place, to provide a forum to work out disputes and differences without resort to violence or war.
UN is useless, but worse, harmful.
Dismantle it.
Withdraw.
Kick it out of the U.S.
I have an idea: let’s cut our contribution to their budget since they aren’t doing their job!
If there were a way to end the U. N. without losing our veto
and letting Russia and China run things, I’d be all for it.
It’s generally a hive of anti-Americanism to the max.
“If there were a way to end the U. N. without losing our veto
and letting Russia and China run things, I’d be all for it.”
I have no problem maintaining membership while cutting off all funding and refusing to participate in their shenanigans. We are, after all, a permanent member and can’t be cast out.
If we can maintain that, I would support it.
Sooner or later China may up the anti some way, paying to
essentially own the place. By that time they’ll be able to
blackmail all the members.
Israel Voted yes
After refusing to earlier on the first resolution or condemnation
The sound and the fury got to them
I see stern letters in Russia’s future.
That’ll show Putin...
