Be skeptical about media coverage of Ukraine
American Thinker ^ | 03/04/2022 | Rajan Laad

If you have been monitoring the coverage of the conflict in Ukraine, it is amply clear that a narrative is being pushed.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is being compared to Winston Churchill during World War II; he is leading his people during perilous times to become an inspiring figure. He refused a safe passage offer from the U.S. with the quip: “I need ammunition, not a ride”. He streams videos from the deserted streets of Ukraine and posts photos with his cabinet. Photos of Zelenskyy surface in military gear on the battlefront. To sum it up, Zelensky is being portrayed as Churchill, Rambo and social media influencers all rolled into one.

Not to be left behind, a former Miss Ukraine, and the First Lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelensky, reportedly joined the army. There are teary moments of Ukrainian soldiers bidding farewell to their families and children in the streets waving at them as they depart for war. There were photos of Russian soldiers holding Ukrainian girls as hostages. We see harrowing footage of injured Ukrainian children, slain Ukrainian soldiers, and explosions. We see courage as a brave Ukrainian child stands up to a Russian soldier, almost ordering him to leave her country.

It is all so poignant and inspiring until you fact-check the images.

The photos of Zelensky in military gear were from February 11, 2021, and April 9, 2021.  The photo of the Russian soldier holding Ukrainian girls at gunpoint was a 2005 photo from the West Bank. Neither the first lady of Ukraine nor the former Miss Ukraine is joining the armed forces.

From "Hillary DID Spy on Trump" - to "Nuclear War in Ukraine!"

Which headline did they want us to forget?

Indeed. This is the same MSM and politicians who have been leading the charge the last two years of lies, propaganda, misinformation and distortions.

In spite of what is or isn’t happening in Ukraine these people are still liars and hate you.

Unity? My arse!

Remember Skeeter: this war has gone on since the coup in 2014. It didn't start in February.

The Euromaidan snipers firing into their own protestors from the Ukrainia hotel. The utterly horrific Odessa massacre. The eight years of varying hot and cold war against the LPR and DPR republics. The children memorialised in the Alley of Angels. These are the bloody fruit of the 2014 coup.

If one were casting about for someone to blame for all this death and horror - my money would be on Obama. The same man that created & armed ISIS, and set it to ravage Syria.

Obama set ISIS in motion for the same reason that he backed the Ukrainean coup: to control who Europe buys its energy from.

Thoght provoking piece. Truth is always the first casualty of war.

Social media is obviously not a source as it is controlled by all parties.

And Crimea. There are no good guys here but my basic point remains. Civilians just going about their lives are being killed in large numbers right now.

We can probably discern another largescale point: every four to eight years, US foreign policy gets a (D) after its name, and becomes amaingly destructive and psychotic. For instance:

Possibly I'm wrong, but I have an un-informed opinion that the GOP left Iraq and Afghanistan as fairly stable polities, only for the Dems to betray everyone and bring them crashing to the ground.

Some FReepers may be able to enlighten me about the disastrous end of Vietnam, which also looks like the Dem's doing.

Zelensky sounds like a Democrat as far as his political goals have been concerned. A lawyer, he only gained recognition politically because he PLAYED the role of President on a TV show. Pro-abortion, pro-pot, anti-gun.

Kinda betting he’s changed his mind on that last one by now.

But... unlike the DNC... He’s also been removing immunity from law makers and trying to reign in the influence of Ukraine’s oligarchs and was at least trying to play nice with Putin before all of this. Those blaming Zelensky for Hunter Biden’s Burisma dealings need to check a calendar because Zelensky has only been in office a couple years while Hunter’s illegal activities stem from 2015.

Putin on the other hand is authoritarian in pretty much everything he’s done. While he’s apparently Russian Orthodox, he’s also pro-abortion and anti-free speech. His attack on Georgia is really damn similar to what he said pre-Ukraine. This doesn’t even touch on the bullsh*t in Crimea. Like Joe Biden, I’m not seeing anywhere he actually earned a living and appears to have gone straight from school into the KGB. Unlike Joe Biden, Putin is ruthless enough to get things done no matter who he has to have disappeared.

Either way... It should be none of our concern. “Not our monkeys, not our circus.” Keep our government, and military, out of it until it DOES concern us.

As an anarcho-Capitalist though... I would love to see import/export restrictions done away with and our private industries profit off selling “bullets, beans, and band-aids” to either side... or even both. Instant job creation. Not to mention trying to land rebuilding contracts once the dust settles.

Donbas is not Russian territory. Nice spin.

And Kosovo isn't US territory. It's independance was assured by US arms, including months of bombardment of Belgrade.

If Kosovo can be freed by the might and valor of the US, why can't Russia step in to help Russophones literally on its border?

Not trying to trap anyone here, or establish a 'gotcha'. Just want to see what arguments we can make either way. Fellow FReepers, why is one different from the other?

The rats’ near perfect record of f*&^ing up on the international stage possibly stems from the same reason they appear insane on their domestic agenda - their basic inability to grasp and/or accept human nature as it is. Expensive and deadly, and not only to us, but America keeps putting them in office.

Their basic inability to grasp and/or accept human nature as it is.

Very succinct. I would also add 'demonic hubris' and 'cognitive disfunction', but you seem to have covered it.

Sad is more like it, really. There’s nothing funny about someone who takes the word of a media that has been lying to his face for two years about something like this where there can be no verification. You don’t have the first clue what’s going on over there. None of us do. But, you sure think you do. You’re no better than the people who ‘follow the science’ that they learned from Savannah Guthrie on the Today Show.
