Ukraine, with Russian troops on its borders, is pressing for membership. But President Biden and European leaders are not ready for that step.
WASHINGTON — The tense talks this week among the United States, Russia and European members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization have made one thing clear: While the Biden administration insists it will not allow Moscow to quash Ukraine’s ambitions to join NATO, it has no immediate plans to help bring the former Soviet republic into the alliance.
If Ukraine were a NATO member, the alliance would be obligated to defend it against Russia and other adversaries. U.S. officials say they will not appease President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia by undermining a policy enshrined in NATO’s original 1949 treaty that grants any European nation the right to ask to join.
“Together, the United States and our NATO allies made clear we will not slam the door shut on NATO’s open door policy — a policy that has always been central to the NATO alliance,” Wendy R. Sherman, the deputy secretary of state, said on Wednesday.
But France and Germany have in the past opposed Ukraine’s inclusion, and other European members are wary — a deal breaker for an alliance that grants membership only by unanimous consent. American and Russian leaders know this. With Russian troops amassed on Ukraine’s eastern border, some current and former American and European officials say Mr. Putin might just be raising the NATO issue as a pretext for an invasion.

Maybe they should focus on Taiwan joining NATO instead.

***That is 2 back-to-back self contradicting sentences.
The second sentence should probably be:
U.S. officials say they will not AGGRAVATE President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia by undermining a policy enshrined in NATO’s original 1949 treaty that grants any European nation the right to ask to join.
By choosing not to AGGRAVATE him, they have APPEASED him. And, just like what happened in Sudetenland when Hitler was appeased, he invaded. When Pootypoot was appeased, he invaded as well.
It’s the same reason why they won’t “AGGRAVATE” China by recognizing Taiwan and yet it has made no difference to the Chinese.
You know damn well (P)resident Bite-me has no idea what's going on. Susan Rice, etc., are running our country. That idiot is totally out of it.
So Mexico entered an alliance with China and allowed Chinese nuclear weapons to be placed placed in Mexico you’ll be OK with that
Oh lookie here, a Monroeski Doctrinaire FReeper.
Ukraine will never join NATO because Russia will fight WWIII preventing it. If Ukraine is eventually allowed to join it will be nothing but a fused glass wasteland, just like much of the United States and Russia.
So NATO should have spoken up before the attack?
Not going to happen until the Big Guy gets his 10%.
Some of this is the fault of the host country themselves.
Little Estonia was among the first to declare independence from the USSR when it crumbled, among the first to join NATO.
Ukraine had roughly the same number of years to join NATO as well. They did not.
Taiwan never declared independence from China.
Both Taiwan and Ukraine have some kind of arrogant hubris operating, wherein they think more highly of themselves than they ought to, unlike little Estonia.
Because NATO is not insane?
Here’s a thought: Why not just say they will never let NATO in and would consider Ukraine a neutral country? Too late now but if that had been established a month ago I think there would quite possibly have been no war.
When did basic military strategy get lost on here? When the USA put nukes in ..turkey I believe the soviets put nukes in Cuba. Nobody wants an antagonistic country on their borders. Stop thinking with your hearts like s liberal and use your minds.
You’re correct. This is essentially the same as when the Soviet Union was trying to put missiles in Cuba. We weren’t too happy about that and I certainly can’t blame Russia for not wanting our missiles in Ukraine.
On the other hand, perhaps Ukraine can be under the protection of NATO, with the understanding that it cannot be used as a missile base.
Except for when Vladimir Putin asked Bill Clinton if Russia could join and was rebuffed. NATO isn't a defense organization, it is an anti-Russia club that Russia will no longer permit new members on its boarders.
Might be tricky for Taiwan to satisfy the “Atlantic” part of that...
Because when your neighbor has already annexed a part of your property (Crimea) and denies your very existence saying your property has always been a part of their property, it would be foolish not to safeguard your remaining property from your neighbor.
It shouldn’t be “soon”, it should be never. There would be no war if these people hadn’t wanted to play “irritate the bear”.
Since we have no interest in conquering Mexico, and nobody outside of some Muzzie terrorists are actually crazy enough to use nuclear weapons against the US, I really don’t have much of an objection to that. In fact it might be a bigger handicap to China than a benefit.
