Philadelphia said Wednesday it will stop enforcing its indoor face mask mandate effective immediately.
“The metrics that we’re following have reached the level where the Health Department feels it is safe to stop enforcing the indoor mask mandate,” said James Garrow, a Philadelphia Department of Health spokesman.
The city further dropped its COVID-19 response level to “all-clear,” the lowest of four levels.
The all-clear level applies when the average daily count of new cases falls below 100, with hospitalizations under 50 and less than two percent of COVID-19 tests coming back positive.
Masks will still be required in city buildings until March 7. Businesses are allowed to require masks if they choose.
Face masks are still required in schools, although the city said it plans to end the requirement March 9 if the present infection trend continues. Masks also will be required for one week following spring break.
The city noted people at high risk or who have close contact with people at high risk may choose to continue wearing masks.
“There’s nothing wrong with this and these people do not deserve harassment. Some may have a family member that is at high-risk, some may be sick and are actually protecting you, and some may just want to be safe. All of those, and more, are valid reasons to keep wearing masks,” the city said.
The city further said “it’s important to remember that the pandemic is not over. If a new COVID variant were to come to Philadelphia or cases started to rise again, we may need to move to the Mask Precautions Level or higher and start enforcing the public mandates again.”
Agreed.
Pity, yes.
Scorn, maybe.
Pennsylvania Ping!
Please ping me with articles of interest.
FReepmail me to be added to the list.
I wouldn’t harass people for voluntarily masking. Look at them like they’re weirdo’s, yes, but not harass them.
they deserve the same that they dished out.
It’s not harassment. It’s open derision and contempt.
People may choose to continue wearing masks. There’s nothing wrong with this.
Except:
1) Mask don’t stop the spread
2) Masks spread germs
They abused rational Americans for over two years and now that they have been exposed they ask us to play nice. No.
I truly enjoy pointing and laughing at people driving in their car alone with a mask on while waiting for the light to change.
The Branch COVIDians need to be paid back in the same coin.
3) Provide a self-righteous illusion of “caring” about others more than you do, bareface.
My wife is having real difficulty recovering from her bout of covid, and when I'm in a crowded area (which I try to avoid - covid or not), I want to minimize risk of bringing ANYTHING back to our home. Some people are just generally filthy - I'm sure we've all been in a grocery when a fellow shopper staggers us with their BO - God knows what else they're carrying.
For me, it's never been pro-mask or anti-mask. It's been about allowing responsible people the freedom to make the correct choice for them at the time.
People are still wear masks out side in Broward county Florida!!! Believe it or not!
The mask may make you feel good but it is not providing the protection you think it is. You are bringing back more germs by wearing, touching and handling that thing. If you are worried about filth, the mask is a non-starter.
I wouldn’t waste my time harassing someone wearing a mask. By now, they are unconvinceable.
Can’t harass. Point and laugh ... would that be OK?
ALL of the harassment we took AND NOW they expect no harassment the hypocrisy is overwhelming!!
“ALL of the harassment we took “
Oh, it went miles beyond harassment. In a few instances, people not wearing masks were KILLED by the the masked sheep. Businesses closed. Livelihoods were destroyed.
I’m going to continue to use scorn and derision when seeing masked people.
As long as the masked keep their mouths shut to me they can go on wearing a rag as far as I’m concerned. They fear the tables have turned, but we are not vindictive little shits like many of them.
“they deserve the same that they dished out.”
Uh, yeah. Where were all the stories about respecting we of the unmasked unvaxxed? All I remember were the shocking remarks about getting punched in the face.
Did they distinguish ridicule and mocking?
