Russia Threatens ‘Nuclear’ World War as Its Paratroopers Descend on Ukraine

Ukraine State Emergency Service/Reuters Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned that a third world war would be “nuclear” and “destructive,” essentially warning NATO not to intervene militarily in Ukraine, a day after peace talks failed to temper the bloodshed and as Russian paratroopers descended on the city of Kharkiv, the second largest city in the nation and the epicenter of fierce fighting. Ukraine’s defense ministry confirmed the arrival of Russian airborne troops on Telegram, though it is unclear if they are involved in a ground battle just yet. “There is an ongoing fight between the invaders and the Ukrainians,” they said. Authorities confirmed Wednesday midday that “massive shelling and bombing” as well as urban warfare was underway. Images showed municipal buildings in the city center on fire.

I agree that Putin is just trying to scare... but weak Biden’s failed Afghan exit invited troubles...

If it were about intelligence I would agree with you. I’m more worried about desperation. I don’t see how this ends well for Putin even if NATO stays out of it. Imagine if NATO gets pulled in, Putin facing either war crimes, a coupe, or assassination, he might figure on taking option #4 and take everyone down with him.

“Putin’s not that stupid.”

I’m thinking the same thing. Everything he and his cronies have worked for (the dachas, the yachts, the prestige, etc) are gone if he presses the button.

Accurate post. His lack of coherence and dementia have opened Pandora’s box.

Because the one thing they fear is our intervention. The Russian army would be destroyed.

And if we think strategically, we would do it.

None of this would have happened if Biden didn’t stupidly accept the invasion and withdraw our embassy.

This notion being presented that Putin is a “mad man” are just idiotic.

This man has risen to and consolidated power in a nation that covers what? 10 or 15 time zones? And has held it for decades... He’s not some mad king.

It does NO ONE any good to play this game... Putin has his reasons, and they aren’t “Insane”. Just because they are too complicated for the flappy lipped empty headed pundit on the talk show to understand, doesn’t mean they are not cogent, intelligent and with purpose.

I’m sure Putin’s advisors told him they can’t afford to be tied down in Ukraine and have NATO intervene as well. Plus they know Biden has stated again and again we won’t fight Russia.

Those two things combined lead to the bellicose threats.

The Russian army, a clear threatvto Europe, is sitting there for the taking.

Always remember, Biden has been wrong on every world issue for the last 50 years.

He’s committed the unforgivable sin - told an aggressive enemy they can do their worst and we won’t fight. There was never a good reason to do that in Ukraine.

Of course no one wants a war between Russia / NATO and that risk kept the peace in Europe for 6 decades.

"His lack of coherence..."

Also lack of any intelligence or foresight from Biden or his advisors. They are the reason that oil is north of $100 a barrel and Russia is getting a cut of that which is helping Russia finance this. None of this has been a secret. Trump laid it all out when he was President, do not allow Russia to make money from their energy.

The war is only one week old and lots of predictions of russians being bogged down. They claim they are trying to limit civilian casualties. They haven’t even cut power and water to kiev. We cut power and water in belgrade during our war against serbia in 1995. We killed lots of innocent civilians with our “precision” surgical strikes, at least one bus and one train full of civilians. My point is that this is the pot calling the kettle black. War is filthy , dirty business, that should be avoided. Watch for surrender or destruction of ukr troops in donbass in a day or two, they’re trapped.

I’m reading everywhere that Russia’s air-force is almost entirely absent for Ukraine. If they aren’t there, then where are they? I think Putin is telegraphing weakness hoping that NATO will enter this war of their own accord. This is terrible to think or say, but its almost like a distraction. Thing is, our side is acting like there is something up their sleeves. Besides, of course, that Russia is expansionistic with guns and bombs, whereas NATO has other countries banging on the door, pleading to join up.

The Russian tactics appear to be to get civilians to flee heavily populated areas so the Russian military can send in special forces to clean up hard core resistance.

This tactic appears to have been mostly successful in Kiev—where civilians have been fleeing en masse.

In Kharkiv the Ukraine forces have made this more difficult by using civilians as “human shields” and not permitting them to flee.

We will hear no cries of outrage about “human shields” from the Mockingbird mass media, of course.

In a day or two, eh?

Troops cut off in a city usually dig in until they’re starved out or destroyed. Never heard of it taking a day or two. Usually takes months and they’ve been dug in there for 8 years.
