resident Joe Biden was met with his first boos of the night at his State of the Union address when he characterized the 2017 Republican tax cuts as benefiting the top 1% of earners.
Biden, speaking before a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, lauded the passage of his partisan $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan while taking a swing at the tax overhaul legislation passed under his predecessor’s administration.
“And unlike the $2 trillion tax cut passed in the previous administration that benefited the top 1% of Americans, the American Rescue Plan helped working people — and left no one behind,” Biden said to fierce booing from the Republican side of the dais.
According to an August 2021 report from the Congressional Budget Office, the tax cuts didn’t just benefit the wealthiest in the country. The nonpartisan CBO found that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act reduced taxes across the board, lowering the average federal tax rate from 20.8% to 19.3% for all filers.
Additionally, from 2017 to 2018 — the year after the so-called Trump tax cuts were passed — the bottom 20% of earners saw their average federal tax rate fall from 1.2% to nearly zero. The top 1% of filers saw a bigger reduction, 1.5 percentage points, but paid the highest effective federal tax rate of any income group.

That’s an outright lie. Trump’s tax cuts helped me. I get $80 more a month in my pension check, and doubled my previous tax return, and I have nothing to claim, no dependents.

All you have to do is look at that 13 year old young boy he brought in that had type-1 diabetes. Talked about how much insulin costs him and promised to bring it DOWN to $35/mo. Gotta be paying a lot more now. Weather it’s big Pharma or the markets that bring up the costs there’s no way they can’t make a profit at $35. If so Biden offered to make US ALL pay for it. Who’s gonna argue with that?

Actually, Trump’s tax reform nailed a large number of the 1% who live in expensive homes in high property tax states, and can no longer deduct most of the local taxes from the federal return.
The media is in the tank for Biden every bit as much as Russian media is in the tank for Putin.
To stimulate job creation Trump invested in capitalists to create jobs since we all know that government doesn’t create anything but messes.

At the time, I was working PT at a fast food restaurant.
The employees all got extra money on their checks, and many of them BITCHED ABOUT IT!
1) “it’s not enough!”
2) “Rich people got more!”
3) “Now I won’t get as big a refund!”
4) “I got more money, now I’ll have to pay more taxes in April!”
5) “This might cost me some of my [insert here] food stamps/WIC/other ‘benefits’!
6) “Orange Man BAD!”
Worse, they weren’t pimple faced teens, but 20+ to 40+ years old!
The more I tried to explain it to them, the more they squealed.
The tax cuts benefit me.
Lol the NYT actually ran a story years ago debunking this 1% nonsense.
That statement IS actually true..
The tax cut DID benefit the top 1%..
What they leave out and want everyone to not even think about is:
The tax cut ALSO benefitted the OTHER 99%.
This is how they play with facts and get away with saying that they’re not lying… Half truths..
