Taiwan has been awash with news about Vladimir Putin's bloody military operation against Kyiv for six consecutive days.
Observers the world over were quick to predict that China's President Xi Jinping would soon attempt the same against Taiwan, which Beijing has claimed for more than 70 years, and about which successive Chinese leaders have created mythologies not dissimilar to those believed in the Kremlin about Ukraine.

Comrade Xi is taking a good look at what is happening to Russia and Putin. Suspect his enthusiasm to invade Taiwan has cooled.
1) Russia is having huge difficulties attacking across frozen fields and paved roads, taking significant casualties against a determined opponent. There is no guarantee that an attack across ninety miles of open ocean will be successful. His “only child army” has little combat experience. Nor have the locally made ships, weaponry, and jets been battle tested or proved themselves effective.
2) The people of Ukraine have given the people of Taiwan great inspiration to fight and resist.
3) Putin has lost the political support of the Russian people, the army and what passes for a political infrastructure in Russia. Russia is suffering. His days are numbered.
4) Comrade Xi knows that if an invasion fails there will be economic, political and social instability in China. If Xi is removed ,it wont be gently. His entire family and supporters will suffer the same fate.

That’s a gamble China might be willing to take. Especially if Xi thinks Putin lacks the balls to do such a thing.
One clear lesson for Taiwan from the invasion of Ukraine is arm yourself to the teeth and be prepared to fight like hell because you’re probably going to get screwed over by the West.
