How about California becoming a sanctuary unrestricted immigration state contributing to this?

This surprises me.

Born, raised, schooled, worked, and lived in California for 58+ years. None of this surprises me.

Why is it shocking?
California also has the largest number of children from illegal aliens and they drag down the educational standards for everyone in California.

Exactly. What's shocking about having the largest illegal immigrant population?

Just a couple of weeks ago I was on a forum where liberals where putting down Mississippi and Alabama as states with the most ignorance. I think the whole lib worldview is turning upside down.

Have you visited that state lately? We have lots of relatives in the sane, if there’s such a place there, Bakersfield area. A place Buck Owens and Waylon Jennings came from. I truly believe this.

It’s shocking that in schools where all they can teach is for young kids to question their gender, and how awful and racist white people are, and how terrible man is because he is “causing climate change”, and where kids have to use deadly force to defend themselves just to go to school in some schools, that the kids would grow up illiterate. Shocking I tells ya

Just love the bogus “reasons” that the article gives for this measure:

- Decades of underinvestment in schools
- culture battles over bilingual education
- dizzying levels of income inequality

And who’s fault is that?

Where the hell is ALL the money from the lottery which was PROMISED to go to education!! CA. had gone way past the point of no return I live here and it is disgraceful!!

This surprises me.

As a survivor of California's public school system it doesn't surprise me at all. I would estimate that 90% of my education was auto-didactic. I tuned out that chaos called 'school' starting around 5th grade...
(and it probably shows)

quote “Decades of underinvestment in schools, culture battles over bilingual education, and dizzying levels of income inequality have pushed California to the bottom of the pile, making it the least literate state in the nation.”

BS SPIN!!!

1. america and calforina spend an ungodly amount on schools!
2. battles of bilingual education? what does that have to do with anything?
3. income inequality? can you say red herring?

The article should of read. Decades of damage inflicted by liberals being solely in charge of Californias schools, cow towing to the Teachers unions, and coddling immergrants instead of forcing them to learn the native language has resulted in what is happening today.
