Former boxing champion Vasiliy Lomachenko has joined the Belgorod-Dnestrovsky Territorial Defense Battalion to help fight for his home country of Ukraine against Russia, according to a post on his official Facebook page. Lomachenko, long considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, is a former featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight titleholder.
He’s not the only Ukrainian boxer enlisting, however.
Vitali Klitschko, a Hall of Fame boxer and mayor of Ukraine's capital of Kyiv, said this week he intends to fight for his native country as it faces an invasion from Russia. Attacks on Ukraine, including one on Kyiv, began in the early morning on Thursday and have continued on since.
"I don't have another choice," Klitschko said when asked by ITV's Good Morning Britain if he would take up arms to defend the country. "I have to do that. I would fight."
Klitschko, a former heavyweight champion, became mayor of Kyiv in 2014. His brother, Wladimir, who is also a former heavyweight champion, is also expected to help defend Ukraine after enlisting in the nation's reserve army earlier this month.
"We will defend ourselves with all our might and fight for freedom and democracy," Wladimir wrote on LinkedIn on Thursday.
Loma also has two gold olympic medals.
Where is lt col vindman?
I love the Klitchko brothers. To bad Vlad stayed past his prime and lost those fights at the end.
But they were great.
Ironically,, Vitali had the MUCH stronger chin but went into politics.
I think the family discussion was that there could be only once champ and he wanted to run for mayor some day anyway.
They said they would never fight each other because of their mom.
would have been a GREAT fight Vitali would have won
I hope he doesn’t die
They were great boxers, and now have turned out to be honorable men setting a good example for younger people...
