President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is winning the social media war. When he appears by the dawn’s early light from Kyiv, the world knows Vladimir Putin hasn't taken down Ukraine yet.
Russia's attack on Ukraine is the first major military confrontation of the social media age. The gut reactions brought to you by social media are a whole new factor impacting the war strategy of both Ukraine and Russia.
Hint: Ukraine’s doing much better.
While armies have used information warfare for ages, the world has never seen this many videos and pictures of a war zone up close and coming at you so fast. On Twitter, @RALee85 posted a TikTok of a Russian Mi-24 attack helicopter engaging a Ukrainian self-propelled air defense missile battery on a highway near Kyiv, and then @hengenahm added the geolocation coordinates.
Granted, it’s hard to form an overall assessment of the campaign from the thousands of battle clips. There’s so much information it’s impossible to digest or verify it all.
But the videos of destroyed equipment tell a tale. You see Ukraine fighting back. You see that Russia’s savage attack is not moving as fast as Putin hoped. The Pentagon said Saturday resistance is greater than the Russians expected. Social media images of destroyed Russian equipment make you believe that's true.
But there’s much, much more to the social media story. You've got posts from three groups: the Russian invaders, Ukraine's defenders and the bystanders. The bystanders are by far the biggest group. Their posts are a huge amorphous collection of war images culled from TikTok and other uploads and curated to Twitter and other sites where journalists and analysts take note. Let's not be naïve. Obviously, the bystander posts include a mix of items from concerned citizens and propagandists for both sides.

They have won the hearts and minds of the ‘bots!
Well, duh. Except for the minor blip of Obama’s “reset,” when we were supposed to be entering a new era, the Soviet Union and Russia have been justifiably demonized for 70 years. The Trump/Russia lie gave that theme new life.
well then ... if social media says so ...
Since the usual Tech-Left suspects cut off all but pro-Ukraine news sources, it is impossible for anyone to form an informed opinion.
Been watching Zelensky’s media presence. Dude is 100%.
When asked and offered evacuation... “I need ammunition, I don’t need a ride.” Refuses to leave Kyiv, now in cammo and carries at all time.
I also think he’s savvy to the fact Putin may offer to negotiate, but Putin is doing it to buy time to re-supply and move units. Zelensky’s not unaware of this.
The Russians can turn of their electricity, high speed internet and cell phones any time they feel like it. Until they do, I will assume that Putin believes everything is under control and going as planned.
Numerous pics of the Ukrainian president Zelenskyy in body armor on 2/24/22? They’re from him inspecting the border on 4/9/21.
Putin is definitely losing the PR but that hasn’t stopped the slaughter.
Winning the social media wars (and two dollars) will get you enough to buy a cup of coffee.
The russian news sources and sources have gone silent because No news will keep the people off the street of moscow. They all have western papers in russian. Most russians speak or read english subtitles well enough to watch a watch a movie.
Claiming a jewish comedian is a Neo Nazi is about all they got. No body was shooting off conventional cruise missiles. Same comedian ran on a reform and anti corruption platform and has gathered both Putin and Brandon as an non supporter.
Everyone knows after the Nazi claims the discussion is over, it is all then just clowns and bears for the kids.
Any other claims of russians being repressed in ukraine or any former soviet state should be met with a history lesson.
Well said! Biden is the best friend Putin ever had.
Finally, an American Media news headline that is believable.
Let’s hear it then. Shutting off Russian propaganda only creates distrust in the pro-Ukrainian propaganda.
It does surprise me how poorly Russia is doing on the psyops front.
The internet is filled with video after video of victorious Ukrainians celebrating on top of burnt out Russian tanks.
I haven’t seen one of Russians celebrating after a victory.
Most of the more dramatic Ukrainian boasts turn out not to be entirely true, but it takes Russia a couple of days to rebut them. By the time they respond Snake Island and the Ghost of Kiev had already become legends.
Which explains also why most of the world is now sending thousands of anti-tank weapons to Ukraine.
Germany, which had come under intense criticism for refusing to export weapons to Ukraine during the military buildup, reversed its position and said it would send 1,000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger missiles to Ukraine.
Sweden, an EU member that is not in NATO and has historically maintained a neutral position in global conflicts, said it will send 5,000 anti-tank weapons, 5,000 helmets, 5,000 body shields and 135,000 field rations — as well as $50 million in funding directly to the Ukrainian military.
Belgium is sending an additional 3,000 machine guns and 200 anti-tank grenade launchers, Zelensky tweeted Sunday.
Hungary said it would not provide arms to Ukraine, but committed to sending 100,000 liters of fuel and 28 tons of food, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The big picture: NATO said Sunday that Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the U.K. and the U.S. "have already sent or are approving significant deliveries of military equipment to Ukraine."

Ukraine says Putin is furious and sulking because he isn’t getting as many Facebook likes.
Putin wants to “get the band back together” aka, he wants the old former USSR back up and running.
As for the Ukraine, this is Biden’s “payback” for the whole Hunter ordeal, an ordeal that cot him lots of money.
Evil Lives on
unfortunately
There is the possible explanation that Russians don't have much experience at successful psyops because they haven't done as much of it as Western "Intelligence" Agencies.
For Instance, it took the FBI to uncover the January 6th Insurrection and attempted Coup by Trump.
Or maybe the Russians are just too stupid to do them, but then how did they figure out how to build all those state of the art Nuclear Warheads or the Hypersonic Missiles? They couldn't steal those from us like China does other technology.
