This is the professor who got into some trouble a while back because he made some comments that "offended" woke people over in the UK. He explains Putin and what is going on perfectly.
Very good piece.
Short summary:
The West lives in a world of illusion in which Human Rights and International Law mean something. In fact, they mean nothing. They only have weight if backed up by Force, and the West abandoned real force decades ago. We now think we live in a world where Force can be avoided. But Putin thinks like statesmen used to think — Churchill, Thatcher, Kennedy, all the rest of them — Force is the only thing that really matters and countries that see themselves as “Good” can use Force if they feel called upon to do so. Putin is not reluctant. But we certainly are. And that is why Xi and Putin will get what they want while Biden drools.
Thats about what I took out of it.
I have watched several of his docus on the past histories of world events and he is one dude I would be honored to have gone to school to learn under.
Excellent summary. I particularly liked the historical material, like the reference of the fall of Rome due to the aqueducts being interdicted with today’s parallel of Putin’s power over the gas pipeline.
Thanks for posting.
Disagree. 30 seconds in, 'Putin is literally Hitler'. After 4 mins Steyn struggles to hobble a coherent link between Putin, the invasion, and social spending from what the historian said.
Here's a better assessment from Michael Caputo who lived and worked in Russia. Not speculative history; a first-hand account.
An eye opener.
Very good. Thanks.
Nice piece. Thanks for posting.
Thanks.
Worth watching.
Good points.
A bit overwrought.

Thanks for the post!
Here is another take by a University of Chicago professor. This discussion was produced about a week before the invasion. It runs well over a hour. The first 25 minutes or so is worth a listen. The rest is Q&A and China.
The short version is this started in 2008 when Nato offered Georgia and Ukraine admittance into Nato and again in 2014 when the Russian friendly government was over thrown in a coup.

It’s not overwrought.
