Russia’s Assault on Ukraine Presses Forward as Street Battles Rage in Kyiv
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 26, 2022 | Yaroslav Trofimov

KYIV, Ukraine—Street battles raged through the night in the Ukrainian capital as Russian forces and undercover units in civilian clothes tried to enter the city, while Russian airstrikes and several airborne landings continued throughout the country.

On Saturday, the third day of the war that Russian President Vladimir Putin unleashed with the aim of overthrowing Ukraine’s elected government and ending its alignment with the West, Ukrainian forces fought fierce battles on all fronts, with each side asserting it had inflicted heavy losses on the other.

After sunrise, President Volodymyr Zelensky recorded a video address from the street outside the presidential headquarters in Kyiv, urging Ukrainians to keep fighting and denying Russian reports that he had called on his forces to lay down arms.

“Truth is on our side. This is our land, our country, our children, and we will keep defending them all,” he said. “Glory to Ukraine.”

A rapid Russian victory in the biggest war in Europe for decades would drastically change the geopolitical balance on the continent, giving Mr. Putin control of strategically vital swaths of the former Soviet Union’s territory and placing Russia’s armies on the doorstep of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

European and U.S. officials are increasingly concerned that Mr. Putin’s broader goal of revising the ending of the Cold War, restoring Moscow’s former sphere of influence in Europe’s east, won’t stop at Ukraine, a fear that could force a rethink of NATO’s military stance and Europe’s energy supplies, which depend in large part on Russia.

If fierce Ukrainian resistance leads to a long and bloody war, however, it would undermine Mr. Putin’s plans and could threaten both his hold on power in Moscow and his efforts to make Russia a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.

I hope the Russian people will look at their casualties, the killing of fellow Slavs, and the economic costs and rise up against Putin. The people of Ukraine are willing to fight, and we should have been arming them.

How many civilians do you think have taken up arms and are dying?

Most of the civilians dying are in apartment buildings and on the bad end of precision cruise missiles that are not very accurate.

Trump was arming them. Obama was sending blankets.

They may be like the WWII Japanese though…the entire populace will die defending their country.

Obama was sending military “meats ready to eat” which is “exactly” what a country which huge agricultural exports “needs”.
Would be funny if no so sad.

Zelenski is a fool for urging civilians to take up arms...this will not end well for him.

Putin is starting out just like Hitler and the Sudetenland and with the same basic premise.

People of Ukraine are fighting for us, we need to help them as much as possible!
Like I mentioned before, they are actually having better military than any other European nation.
Since they are “all in” and Putin really cannot go all in, the Russian forces engaged in Ukraine are not really that much better then the Ukraine ones.
I think, Putin thought that Ukraine will either just fold or there would be a lot of Russian saboteurs helping him. He even issued some statements to Ukrainian military to join him. It looks like he miscalculated. There are indeed some saboteurs, but it seems almost all Ukrainians decided to unite and fight.

ChoMoeJoe. He just plain old doesn’t give a carp! I hope the Democrats are proud of themselves. Another headline I saw on the board is “people have no idea how far Wall Street is going to crash.”

I think we’re beginning to get a pretty good idea of what that will look like.

From the terrible disaster Russians got on the street of Grozny in Chechnya, I think the least Russian wants is an extended fight in the streets of Kyiv.

"People of Ukraine are fighting for us, we need to help them as much as possible!"

We should send them leaf-shaped Colonel Venman because Ukraine tried to recruit him to be their country's defense minister three times. Venman has a lot of colorful bling on his uniform too!

The Ukrainians are not fighting for us, they're fighting for their own country and, if they really want it, they can spill their OWN blood to save it. Ukraine is an integral part of Russia and they were going to fight to keep it and it makes no sense to spill American blood to do it.

Why go house to house?

-Capture the ports in Odessa.
-Turn off the pipelines running through Ukraine.
- Cut off border to Poland and the west.
- Destroy power plants, water treatment and sewer facilities, telephone/cell phone service, and no food/fuel delivery to any major city, especially Kyiv.
-Allow women and children to leave.
-Prevent the crops from being harvested or have them sent to Russia.

How much reserve water/food is available in major cities? Saw a lot of people with dogs/pets running around....so if they have enough to feed pets.... they can still feed themselves.

I’d wait about 2-3 months and starve them out.

They did it in the past and it worked fairly well. I think that just blasting away at the city is going to be a method to see how many troops Russia will be facing and their capabilities.
