Panel urges changes to make US organ transplants more fair

The U.S. transplant system needs an overhaul to stop wasting organs and give more patients a fair chance at the life-saving surgery, says an influential scientific advisory panel that set a five-year deadline to turn things around.

More than 106,000 patients are on the nation’s list for a transplant from a deceased donor, and at least 17 die every day waiting. Many more who could benefit from a transplant never get put on the waiting list, particularly people of color, the report stressed.

“While the transplant system does a lot of good things and saves a lot of lives, it is demonstrably inequitable and doesn’t work for enough people,” Dr. Kenneth Kizer, a well-known expert in health care quality who chaired the panel, told The Associated Press. “A lot of things can be done to make the system work better for more people.”

Black Americans are three times more likely to suffer from kidney failure than white people but far less likely to be referred for transplant evaluation. They wait longer for a deceased-donor organ, and are less likely to find a living donor.

Doesn’t surprise me. When our first daughter was born, my wife was in a double room with a lady of color who had also just given birth. I was there when this happened- the nurse came in and told her she was being discharged tomorrow.
She replied “No I’m not, I’m staying another night.” Nurse went out. Nurse AND doctor came in together, and doctor told her “You are going home tomorrow”.
This was 38 years ago.

It’s not a “black and white “ issue. Compatibility is the determining factor, starting with blood type.

So, waiting for a deceased compatible donor? That would need more donors who are black so the dna is more likely to be compatible.

Could they use kidneys from all the black homicide victims in Chicago and other inner cities? Seriously! Where else would they get all those donors from?

“Black Americans are three times more likely to suffer from kidney failure than white people but far less likely to be referred for transplant evaluation. They wait longer for a deceased-donor organ, and are less likely to find a living donor.”

Kidney risk factors:
https://www.kidneyfund.org/all-about-kidneys/risk-factors

“Diabetes is the leading risk factor for kidney disease and the most common cause of kidney failure. High blood sugar from diabetes damages your kidneys and lowers their ability to filter waste and fluid from your blood. Over time, this causes kidney disease. If you have diabetes, healthy eating, being active and taking medicine can help slow or avoid damage to your kidneys.”

Which races are more likely to lead unhealthy lifestyles (alcoholism, drug abuse, bad eating habits leading to diabetes)?

https://www.diabetes.org/about-us/statistics/about-diabetes
The rates of diagnosed diabetes in adults by race/ethnic background are:

14.5% of American Indians/Alaskan Natives.
12.1% of non-Hispanic blacks.
11.8% of Hispanics.
9.5% of Asian Americans.
7.4% of non-Hispanic whites.

“Logic is racist.”

You’re right. Killing the patient by tossing in any old organ that doesn’t match up and the lack of match consideration would probably get the doctor 30 years. So now we’ve successfully taken three or more people out of the loop: the black patient, the patient that could have safely used the organ, and the doctor. Others can be the hospital, the surgery team, the parking attendant, housekeeping, and any visitors on the same floor after 9 P.M. Got to get some bang for the buck in the suits or tort claims or the lawyer won’t get their 70% in the multimillion dollar claim and buy their island in Tahiti.

What I would like to know, is how do they know that blacks are three times more likely to have liver failure, and why?
I received a new liver last year and honestly, I couldn’t care less if it came from a black person. Maybe it did, for all I know.
I pray for that person, my donor, every day, and for his/her family as well.
A life cut short, for whatever reason, left a legacy of saving lives.

“Didn’t the family of the girl end up suing the hospital?”

Yes, they got a massive settlement from Duke. They were happy to make that go away. They screwed up big time. Between that and the guy who faked his cancer research and washing the surgical instruments in hydraulic fluid, you really have to wonder if it’s all it’s cracked up to be.

“Don’t forget the lacrosse team.”

That wasn’t the hospital, but yes, what a debacle that was. It kind of foreshadowed what is going on now. Fortunately, the guys that were involved were cleared. I am not sure that would happen today.

Sad story, hope she survives and thrives.

I’m overdue for a corneal transplant. Idiot doctor said no 12 years ago because I was too old. Then had me use ointment that totally wrecked the pretty good one I have. Right cornea so dry it scratches inside of my eyelid and surgery too complicated for most docs. I’m going to different doc next month, prefer waiting til spring when healing is easier.

I have AB negative blood, which is very rare, but fortunately, blood type doesn’t matter with corneas. I wonder whether I can be an organ donor? Probably if people with rare blood types are on the list.

In major urban areas across the country hundreds of people will die of gunshot wounds. Are those organs, most from people of color, being harvested for other people of color?
