WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden hit back Thursday against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, unleashing robust new sanctions, ordering the deployment of thousands of additional troops to NATO ally Germany and declaring that America would stand up to Russia's Vladimir Putin.
He also acknowledged that the invasion -- and efforts to thwart Putin -- will have a cost for Americans. But he sought to reassure that the economic pain that may come with rising energy prices will be short lived in the U.S.
As for the Russian president, Biden said, “He’s going to test the resolve of the West to see if we stay together. And we will.”
Targeting Russia's financial system, Biden said, the United States will block assets of large Russian banks, i mpose export controls aimed at the nation's high-tech needs and sanction its business oligarchs.
The president said the U.S. also will be deploying additional forces to Germany to bolster NATO after the invasion of Ukraine, which is not a member of the defense organization. Some 7,000 additional U.S. troops will be sent.
But some U.S. lawmakers—and Ukrainian officials—called on Biden to do more.
“There is more that we can and should do,” said Sen Bob Menendez, D-N.J., the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, pointing to the possibility of removing Russian banks from the SWIFT international banking system and sanctioning Putin personally. “Congress and the Biden administration must not shy away from any options.”
Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell expressed support Thursday for Biden's latest moves but also urged Biden to apply maximum pressure on Putin.

It will take a Trump type “total energy” policy…
There is an enormous difference between manpower and combat power.
US has 90% of deployable combat assets.
What’s the use of sending troops to Germany now? It’s just needless expense and idle posturing.
That's the solution. Just as Reagan did, choke them off economically, so they won't have the resources to do any more mischief. That, and, for the European countries to build up their defenses. Which means they'll have to increase productivity and get their noses out of the asses of the Greens.
It is comical that Biden shifts troops to Germany.......the price for Germany temporarily suspending their plans for Russian Pipeline.
When NATO was formed, most countries were energy dependent. They burned wood, oil etc.
Now, because of “climate change” fear and propaganda…we reduce our traditional energy production while financing Russia and Chinese control of the rare earths etc needed for alternative energy by purchasing their traditional energy sources.
Anna Lynn is gettign absolutely torched on twitter and in news stories. Just google Anna Lynn McCord
and really it’s quite amusing, although you’re correct, no more than 30 seconds is required.
but check the replies to her post on twitter, many are scathing and brutal and hilarious. And spot on about how empty-headed Anna Lynn is.
all kabuki theater
LOL
He did that a couple of days ago
Remember when Biden was asked 3 weeks ago if he was waiting for Putin to make the first move.....Bidens response....”What a stupid question”. ...But Biden certainly did exactly that!
America, f*** yeah! Coming again to save the mother f****** day yeah!...
And remember, freedom costs a buck ‘o five.
Europeans seem to think they’ll survive using wind and solar as their energy sources.
Meanwhile how big a check will comrade xiden be writing pooty every month for the oil we have to buy since all the domestic production has been strangled? Our drillers should be getting rich drilling and pumping like mad with $100 oil.
Trudeau was too busy kneeling to BLM…you can’t expect him to finance NATO during a “National Emergency”
Vladimir Putin has caused the misery we are suffering.
Vladimir Putin has always caused the misery we are suffering.
Eastasia has always been at war with Oceania.
It’s a 1984 world with Big Brother Biden at the helm. It’s hopeless to apply reason to all this.
Forcing the Russians to settle their energy contracts in Euros and Yuan will open the door to more countries moving away from the $USD as the world’s reserve currency.
I think the Europeans even developed a SWIFT alternative during the Trump administration as a way around US sanctions on Iran, so there is infrastructure already in place.
Americans should think twice about speeding up this transition away from the $USD.
But…disrupting American flow to the world is okay?
These Democratic Progressives have been listening to too much Russian/Chinese propaganda in regards to global climate change…
