Alabama OKs bill to ban hormone treatments for trans youth

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Senate on Wednesday approved legislation that would prohibit transgender minors from being given puberty-blockers, hormones or surgeries to affirm their gender identity — treatments that the legislative sponsor equated to child abuse.

Senators voted 24-6 for the legislation that now moves to the Alabama House of Representatives.

The bill, sponsored by Republican Sen. Shay Shelnutt of Trussville, would make it a felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, for a doctor to prescribe puberty-blockers or hormones or perform surgery to aid in the gender transition of people 18 years old or younger.

“We don’t want parents to be abusing their children. We don’t want to make that an option, because that’s what it is: It’s child abuse. This is just to protect children,” Shelnutt said.

Opponents said lawmakers were inserting themselves into decisions that belong with families and their doctors.

Dr. Nola Ernest, a pediatrician and vice president of the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, told the committee that the legislation “overrides science.”

“The use of medications to treat gender dysphoria, under a team of medical expert is evidence-based standard and often life-saving,” Ernest said.

Jeff White, the parent of a transgender daughter, urged lawmakers to, “vote no on this extremist bill before it kills someone.”

“This bill is not about compassion or protection. It is a violation and subjugation of who my daughter is,” White said.

White said his daughter is “one of the kindest and most creative people I am privileged to know” and that the gender-affirming treatment she receives allows her to focus on having a normal childhood.

If someone wants to mutilate themselves when they’re an adult then so be it. There is no situation where any adult, doctor or parent, should be able to consent to mutilate someone who isn’t of an age where they can legally decide for themselves.

If the trans remorse doesn't get to them eventually, how many will suffer serious psychological and/or health conditions as a result of transgender procedures? Putting a kid on puberty blockers, pumping them up with more testosterone and/or estrogen than their bodies are NATURALLY designed to handle, not to mention the potentially dangerous side effects the meds administered have must surely have a long term deleterious effect on their well being.

There's a reason why many health care professionals refuse to get involved with these procedures. Deeply held religious and moral objections and medical ethics play a big part. But could it also be they see the writing on the wall? It would come as no surprise if one day class actions are filed against the Drs, hospitals, quack therapists and of course big pharma by these lost souls. Many may turn against their own parents for being duped into thinking it was in their children's best interests. I can just envision ambulance chasers like Morgan & Morgan running ads along the lines of "do you or a loved one suffer serious psychological and/or life threatening health conditions as a result of transgender procedures? Have you lost a loved one as a result of these procedures? If so you can be entitled to significant compensation. Call us for a free consultation". And the same lawyers raking in the big bucks fighting for trans rights will be the same shysters making MO MINEY MO MONEY MO MONEY filing those suits. What a racket!!

totally agree. An adult can lop off of glue on anything they want, including an elbow, but kids are seriously too young to make that choice.

It sounds like good legislation to me. It’s frustrating that we need a law on such a subject, but that’s the politically correct world we live in. And in that world transsexual issues are pushed on us. They are pushed even on children.
