Vadim Petrov, a native of the Kaliningrad region of Russia, the coordinator of the Baltic Republican Party, during Sunday's protest at the Russian Embassy in Warsaw ripped up the Russian Constitution in protest against Vladimir Putin's policies. He also handed over an ultimatum to the Russian Embassy in Warsaw, emphasizing that if the Kremlin refuses to de-escalate the situation around Ukraine's borders, his party will initiate a referendum on the Kaliningrad region's secession from Russia, Ukrinform reports.
"Putin introduced amendments to the [Russian] Constitution in order to rule forever. But after 2024, he will be an illegitimate president," Petrov said, tearing up the Russian Constitution.
He also sent an ultimatum to the Russian embassy from the Baltic Republican Party. It emphasizes that pulling Russian troops to Ukraine's borders, subordinating Belarus to Moscow and the threat of military action could lead to a full-scale war in Europe.
The document says that the people of the Kaliningrad region oppose the militarization of the region, and do not want to spoil good neighborly relations with Poland and Lithuania. It is noted that as a result of the conflict, the region may find itself in isolation, with a shortage of food.
In order to de-escalate the situation, the document proposes to pull Russian troops back from Ukraine's borders, end the occupation of eastern Ukraine and Crimea, withdraw troops from Belarus and stop supporting illegitimate president Lukashenko, and demilitarize the Kaliningrad region by 50%.
If the requirements are not met over the next two months, the Baltic Republican Party will initiate an electronic referendum on the secession of the Kaliningrad region from Russia.
"We want to draw parallels with the Kremlin's organization of a referendum in the Ukrainian Autonomous Republic of Crimea. The citizens of Russia will be informed that this was an expression of will of the residents of the peninsula.' Therefore, the referendum on the secession of the Kaliningrad region from Russia may also be an expression of will of the people of our region," the appeal reads.
It is emphasized that being guided by the will of the people of the region, the Baltic Republican Party will ask for support from all countries of the civilized world.
The document states that the party conducted an online poll of residents of the Kaliningrad region for more than a year. The survey found that most respondents see the future of the region together with Europe.
Petrov left the ultimatum in the mailbox of the Russian Embassy in Poland.
The Baltic Republican Party functioned in the Kaliningrad region for over ten years and was banned in Russia in 2003. It had its representatives in local authorities. It is estimated that many people in the region share the party's view of broad autonomy within Russia or the region's possible secession from Russia.
The UN should immediately recognize the independence of the Kaliningrad region of Russia.
Should threaten to send peacekeeping forces too.
Good...lets arm them all including the Chechnyans.
Good job Democrats - you’ve driven us right into WW3
While we’re at it, Silesia and Danzig need to be returned to Germany.
Also Konigsberg and Pomerania.
You like the UN?
I’d say a “1984” situation.
Can anyone imagine the above non-story to be reported at a time when journalism was still a thing?
Thanks for the reminder to support Chechen independence!!!
So... NATO can free Kaliningrad from Russia and deliver it to the tender mercies of "democracies" run by Claus Schwab and the World Economic Forum?
Not particularly.
But it would be more upsetting to Russia, if the UN did it instead of the US.
The UN is united against Russia right now. Which is good news.
The UN being united is also bad news because they won’t stick to enforcing existing borders.
The Russian exclave of Kaliningrad is a political and geographic anomaly. Separated from Russia and situated on the Baltic Sea, the region is surrounded by NATO-member states Poland and Lithuania. It’s closer to Berlin and Prague than it is to Moscow and St Petersburg.
Russia has nukes there.
won’t happen
ever
the place is too important to Russia, period.
“Good job Democrats - you’ve driven us right into WW3”
You skipped school the day they taught about cause and effect, didn’t you?
No one made Russia invade Ukraine and then seize Crimea and parts of Donbass. No one is making them try to seize even more of Ukraine.
Maybe you haven’t noticed but Belarus has been invaded and occupied by Russia, too. Their anschluss will no doubt be formalized in the coming days.
This is not the doing of the Democrats. If anything they’re making it worse by not standing up to Russian imperialism with something more substantial than limited sanctions.
What’s called for here is a total trade embargo. Anything less is tacit approval of Russia’s gangster regime.
I’m sure Königsberg is on the table as German-Russian negotiations continue.
If they win their independence, will they change the name back to Königsberg? It is currently named after Mikhail Kalinin, an Old Bolshevik who survived Stalin’s purges.
“While we’re at it, Silesia and Danzig need to be returned to Germany.”
It’s really irrelevant since it’s all European Union anyway.
If I were Petrov I would hire a food tester.
“won’t happen ever the place is too important to Russia, period.”
According to the rules set forth by Russia the opinions of Moscow are irrelevant. If the people of Kaliningrad desire and vote for independence then that’s their right.
Just like the people of Crimea, Luhansk, and Donetsk.
LOL.
Königsberg sounds a lot better than having to bear the name of some murderous Russian chekist.
