no one could have possibly predicted Democrats would cause rent increases, right?

all of the new big spending bills were put through with GOP support, either by walking it through the committees instead of blocking it, or by flat out providing the votes needed to pass it. They could have stopped most, if not all of it. The didn't.

They're not really different than the dems.

“...shortage of rental units?”

Another possibility is that some have taken their rentals off the market because they can’t collect rent and the people in the units can’t be ejected while they do damage to the property. So they either sell them, let them sit if they are able cutting off power and water while doing as much as they can for security and break ins, and keeping the police on speed dial. It costs them less to close them than keep them filled.

rents follow housing prices, housing prices follow new housing prices, new housing prices follow building materials prices, building materials prices follow inflation, inflation is caused by out-of-control government spending/borrowing, Democrats cause out-of-control government spending/borrowing ... no one could have possibly predicted Democrats would cause rent increases, right?

You left out labor costs. This also drives housing costs up and rents follow.

Paid almost 4 bucks for HALF a loaf of pumpernickel bread from the bakery.

Same here. I love pumpernickel.............. but not at that price.

My monthly “big shopping” used to result in a brimming cartful for $200 or so. Now, $200 fills barely 3/4 of it.

I can remember my parents being shocked that $10 worth of groceries could fit into only two shopping bags. Of course, this was in the early 50s.

I still remember my grandma & grandpa (God Rest Their Souls) talking about 5 cent loaves of bread.

God help the landlords that are under progressive counties and cities control.

I'll bet that a sizable portion of the increases in rents are due to landlords trying to recoup their losses from the past year, when their tenants weren't paying their rent.
