Rescuers are racing to salvage a US-bound cargo ship in the Atlantic engulfed in flames with 4,000 cars on board including Bentleys, Audis and Lamborghinis.
The operation is taking place off the Azores archipelago where the 'Felicity Ace' cargo ship caught ablaze at sea on Wednesday.
Lithium-ion batteries in the electric cars on board have caught fire and the blaze requires specialist equipment to extinguish. Investigators are probing whether the batteries started the onboard inferno.
The ship is still ablaze and plumes of white smoke are billowing from the vessel as a Portuguese navy ship works to stop it sinking with the 3,965 Volkswagen AG vehicles on board, including 1,100 Porches and 189 Bentleys, thought to be worth a combined £120 million.

And to think that the Corvair was just rolling over due to poor handling (drivers).
Hopefully throwing away their lithium batteries. Zinc-air anyone?
QUESTION: How many gasoline engines explode on its own like that?
When will electric vehicles be deemed environmentally unsafe?
Lump in the throat lesson about the transitoriness of life and life’s ambitions. Best plans of mice and men and all those old saws talking in the park.
Insurance fire. The Biden Bucks the luxury autos would bring weren’t worth it.
So did anybody else who managed to read to the end of the headline…
”…blaze fueled by batteries in electric vehicles”You just set a new FR record! Not only did you not read the article or the excerpt, you didn’t even read the whole headline. Well done, sir!
Why would they need to start accepting reality? This is just another event that will be conveniently pigeonholed as "disinformation."
We figured they had to be electric cars, since gasoline cars are NEVER fueled when shipped in mass quantities.
Of course the problem with electric cars is that removing the fuel means removing the batteries, and I guess they weren’t designed for that.
Perhaps in the future, they’ll have the batteries added after they reach their destinations, at least protecting the rest of every car from being destroyed by one bad battery cell in one car.
“I’m sorry it is happening, but if that’s what it takes to dead-end -vehicles, that’s what it takes.”
What an IGNORANT thing to say. Don’t you know that electric cars are going to SAVE THE PLANET? No wonder people call us idiots.
(how’s that for my imitation of the EV reps here?)
EV= Exploding golf carts.
Well thank you for being an ass.
“And to think that the Corvair was just rolling over due to poor handling (drivers).”
The Corvair - especially the ‘62 - had some issues.
The swing axle in the real relied upon non-standard tire pressures (which the owners typically knew nothing about unlike today) and had very poor handling when full of cargo or people.
After ‘62 anti-sway bars were installed as were stiffer hinges and locking mechanisms for the front ‘trunk’ hood (real engine). This hood would fly-off in a crash and decapitate the occupants.
Virtually all existing Corvairs have had these modifications, either by the factor or third party mods.
Fire at sea is NEVER fun.
Perhaps the batteries should be installed AFTER the vehicles arrive at the destination. Besides, with no batteries in the vehicles, that would discourage car-jacking incidents while in transit.
That's right, sheeple, put your new electric vehicle in the family garage. What could go wrong?
>>Well thank you for being an ass.
Take it as a badge of honor. It’s an ongoing joke an not offensive. We all have done this in coffee-less daze, a quick scroll through new articles, excitement at finding a new ping to ourselves, etc. I ensure you it’s not a personal dig, but we often take the piss out of such clumsiness when it suits and it makes a good joke.
“That was Jon Voight’s car!…”
Correction....
That was John Voights car!
LOL...can’t comment on your pathetic reading ability so you resort to ad hominem attacks. You are the perfect democrat.
