Corn-Based Ethanol May Be Worse For the Climate Than Gasoline, a New Study Finds

Ethanol made from corn grown across millions of acres of American farmland has become the country’s premier renewable fuel, touted as a low-carbon alternative to traditional gasoline and a key component of the country’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

But a new study, published this week, finds that corn-based ethanol may actually be worse for the climate than fossil-based gasoline, and has other environmental downsides.

“We thought and hoped it would be a climate solution and reduce and replace our reliance on gasoline,” said Tyler Lark, a researcher with the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and lead author of the study. “It turns out to be no better for the climate than the gasoline it aims to replace and comes with all kinds of other impacts.”

Where I live in NE Florida, I’ve noticed in the last couple of years, the large gas/convenience stores are over pumps with 100% pure gasoline 0% ethanol, I used extensively in my boat and started using it in my vehicle.

Example #1393234 of government incompetence

Corn ethanol wasn’t even a good idea in the 1970s when it was proposed. The bad and expensive consequences of it became obvious very soon - from overproduction of corn, to mono-cropping, to agricutlure run-off, to high costs, to bad effects on engines, even to starvation in Africa...

And yet, it continues....

It has to be distilled. It has heat wasted in the manufacture of the product and probably mechanical cooling requiring energy as well. Its not like Popcorn brewing shine down in the creek bed. Its manufactured in a huge industrial plant before you can put it in your car and ruin the engine because its substandard fuel for an internal combustion engines.

FAIL

Basic chemistry and a modicum of thermodynamics would have revealed this a decade ago.

Oh wait, it did ...

But then again what they call worse for the environment isn’t actually worse.

The only impact this will have is to accelerate the shift to EVs.

Read between the lines. This is just one more effort to force us into electric cars or out of cars entirely. I suggest that the study is a fraud intended to reach a predetermined conclusion.

...nothing about ground water contamination due to leaks in underground tanks and pipe lines. Can you put a dollar on that?

This sign reminds me of why old-time mountain bootleggers made shine instead of selling bushel corn.

Iowa corn production yields more like 500+ gallons of ethanol per acre (average).

Exactly, we have known this for a long time. It has been very easy to prove for quite a long time. Of course, this is based on the assumption that CO2 is bad for the environment. Economically, it requires government subsidies to coerce its use.

If there are folks starving it is the height of stupidity to burn food. And especially food that needs to be coaxed into being useful in an ICE.

It contaminates ground water and screws up engines. Alot of damage just to buy farmer votes!
