Austria escaped crisis by 'declaring neutrality.'.... Ukraine could follow that lead.....
The Bulletin (Of the Atomic Scientists) ^ | February 7, 2022 | Thomas Shea

Austria and the four powers agreed to Austrian neutrality in 1955, which has proved remarkably successful....Could Ukraine follow Austria’s lead to resolve the current crisis? To be sure, the circumstances of post-World War II Austria differ from the current moment...Ukrainian citizens are desperately preparing—for what? No one knows, given the uncertain course of the current crisis.

What it might look like..... No foreign military forces should be allowed on Ukrainian territory, and the military forces of neighboring countries should be deployed away from the borders. Ukraine’s military personnel and weaponry should be limited to that which is necessary to address its domestic security concerns: assist in national emergencies and possibly support UN peace keeping missions.

A neutral Ukraine could join the European Union (like Austria) but not NATO.

Months before the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic declared “its intention of becoming a permanently neutral state that does not participate in military blocs and adheres to three nuclear free principles: to accept, to produce and to purchase no nuclear weapons.”

The declaration made clear that it was “the basis for a new constitution and laws of Ukraine and determines the positions of the Republic for the purpose of international agreements.”

Provisions for Ukrainian neutrality must guarantee its energy sources and fuel transshipment rights.

As Austria drafted its post-war constitution, it secured commitments from the four powers to protect its neutrality. When all signed the Austrian State Treaty, Austria set a path toward stability and peace.

Ukraine should draft a new constitution that proclaims perpetual neutrality and outlines the rights and obligations of all Ukrainian citizens.

When they live next door to Russia?

Russian military forces occupy Ukrainian territory. Let them leave and then let Ukraine choose their own path.

This isn’t a “Russia” or “Putin” problem.

This is entirely a DNC run regime action.

There was ZERO issues with this the entire time Trump was in office for 4 years - but now it’s suddenly an issue again?

BS.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is mostly concerned these days with the “existential danger” of climate change. Just sayin....

Hard to stay neutral when you already have a foreign army occupying your territory that keeps shooting artillery at you or sniping at your people during a “cease fire” that they keep blaming you for violating.

Ukraine declaring and practicing true neutrality would be the smartest thing it ever did

It would give it true independence, away from meddling of Russian Oligarchs and the American CIA deep state.

Not needing to seek favors with whores like Hunter Biden would go a long way towards fixing corruption in the Ukraine also.

That does not mean it’s not possible as a solution or at least discussion.

Unfortunately other nations have vested interests in Ukraine and it sure isn’t for a peaceful country.

You're talking about "discussion" with a gangster regime. The troop buildup, the threats of nuclear war, the natural gas blackmail, all show that this is not about "discussion." It's about forcing Europe to isolate Ukraine so as to facilitate its rape.

I do not agree with you...it’s not about what you have described. Putin and Ukraine understand their differences. So you and I will not see this situation in the same light.

Further Europe won’t isolate Ukraine....but if they really wanted it, and if Russia really wanted it, none of this would be happening. he fact is nobody wants to assume responsibility for the failed state of Ukraine.

It’s certainly an option all sides should discuss. Unfortunately there too many complications and various groups within Ukraine unwilling to make compromises....which is why every solution agreed on falls flat.

You're a Putinist who, when not posing as an expert on Ukraine, sits around trying to guilt trip FReepers into watching the Beijing Olympics. If we actually agreed on anything, you'd have to tear down your alter to Putin in your bedroom.

Austria "lived next door" to the Soviet-run and occupied Warsaw Pact when neutrality was successfully offered as a way out of 4-country allied military occupation at the end of WW2.

It worked.

Best thing to do for Ukraine is to split it in half.

Intersting map. Interesting that it doesn’t show Crimea as part of the Ukraine.

Neutrality is not possible for the Ukraine.

Russia and Ukraine are sister entities descended from Kievan Rus, but still distinct. Moscow views Ukraine as a breakaway state while the Ukrainians increasingly feel separate. And Putin’s grab of Crimea only accelerated that feeling of separation.

“There were zero issues when trump was in office “

What are you talking about????

There was constant fighting ad deaths of soldiers and civilians I the Donbas region since 2014. The war never stopped. Putin is now threatening openly as he is desperate to keep Russian people’s attention away from the economic crisis.

True neutrality for Ukraine is like asking Tibet to have true neutrality
