At this point in the coronavirus pandemic, some areas are phasing out mask mandates, but, at the national level, the guidance to wear masks is staying put, at least for now. So, should you mask up or not? Infectious disease experts have some advice for wherever you live.

About a fifth of states never had mask mandates. Some states with more conservative governors, such as Florida, punished schools that put mask mandates in place by withholding funds, even when COVID-19 cases were at record levels.

If you are not ill and you do not feel especially vulnerable, the answer is no. If you do feel ill or feel especially vulnerable and think wearing a mask will protect you or will protect others from any respiratory illness you have, then in closed quarters with close contact at least consider an N95 mask, but don’t bother with lesser cloth masks, they do not contain any respiratory infection, and don’t bother with wearing them outdoors just walking around, where they do nothing besides restrict your own breathing.
