The Anti-gun Laws That Make Progressives Uneasy
msn ^ | 10 feb 2022 | Conor Friedersdorf

Gun cases pull progressives in opposite directions. They generally favor the strict gun-control laws that prevail in many liberal jurisdictions, commonly advocating even stricter laws meant to reduce gun possession and crime. Yet they are also sharply critical of laws that yield long prison sentences disproportionately for men of color and cut against reformers’ push to reduce mass incarceration. And anti-racist ideology offers no simple answers about how aggressively to prosecute gun cases. Which should a D.A. opposed to racial inequity prioritize—the disproportionate rate at which Black and Latino residents are arrested for possessing firearms, or the disproportionate burden gun violence and deaths impose on those same communities?

Nation wide constitutional carry would eliminate most of this.

No license should be required to exercise a Right. Or, the means to protect one’s own (or others’) lives.

Then they could prosecute those prohibited persons equally.

There is nothing progressive about so called progressives.

The anti-gun laws do not make the #ComDems “uneasy”.

The thought that they may be voted out of office, if they try, makes them uneasy. They fear the voters, they fear voters less if they are disarmed.

They can forget that crap. We are not going there. The NE and the Left Coast may be brainwashed into accepting butchery of the 2nd amendment, but the rest of the nation will not buy this.

“Yet they are also sharply critical of laws that yield long prison sentences disproportionately for men of color and cut against reformers’ push to reduce mass incarceration.”

Thanks for the Trolling Point, MSN. So, for now on, when on Leftist sites talking about increasing the punishment for gun possession, I’ll say something like:

“Normally, I would support stronger sentences for gun possession, but I think think this law would disproportionately affect the black man, as black men tend to be in public with guns more, but without proper documentation. Now if the law were written so that no black man would be arrested, I’d be good with it.”

(an indirect way of stating where the problem is, also)

Coming soon to a country near you.

It’s simple: just selectively only prosecute white people for gun crimes.

Yet they are also sharply critical of laws that yield long prison sentences disproportionately for men of color and cut against reformers’ push to reduce mass incarceration. And anti-racist ideology offers no simple answers about how aggressively to prosecute gun cases. The black and Latino residents have the option to adjust their behavior to the point where law enforcement has no reason to arrest them, prosecutors have no need to prosecute them and prisons no reason to incarcerate them.

That said, mere possession of a weapon should NEVER be a reason for arrest, conviction or incarceration, of anyone of any color. "Shall not be infringed" is supposed to be the law of the land.

They are for “gun control” but against “thug control”, as their real objective is to disarm the law-abiding and make us easy prey for thugs.

I would go for prohibition of possession by a convicted felon, or at least prohibition for someone on parole or probation.

I have long held that anyone who cannot be trusted to be armed should not be running around loose.
